One in every 112 employees in Slovakia comes from another country

According to the latest statistics presented by the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Centre (ÚPSVaR) on Thursday, November 24, the number of foreigners working in Slovakia now exceeds 20,000, and only around one in five of them (4,354) are women. The highest number of foreign employees registered in Slovakia comes from Romania (4,210), followed by Czechs (2,855), Poles (2,108), Hungarians (2,074) and Ukrainians (968).

Doctors, government haggle over pay

The Medical Trade Unions Association (LOZ) representing protesting hospital doctors has said it considers the government’s offer of an average proposed pay rise of €300 per month to be too low. However, agreement was reached over the LOZ’s other three demands at a marathon meeting between union representatives and Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ)) and Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik (Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)) on Wednesday, November 23.

Report: Platinum mesh from state reserves was sold ‘illegally’

Government Office inspectors have revealed that the administration of the State Material Reserves led by Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) nominee Eva Hrinková repeatedly broke the law when selling platinum mesh to a company belonging to Michal Hudoba, an SDKÚ candidate in the 2010 elections. The inspection found that the administration breached the law when it invited possible bidders to take part in the sale via the web. Moreover, it acted illegally when selecting an expert to assess the value of the platinum being sold, the Sme daily wrote on Thursday, November 24. The daily reported that the platinum mesh is probably already abroad and the administration has lost the only existing sample.

Smer-led government also bugged Pravda reporter

According to a report in the Sme daily on November 24, former defence minister Jaroslav Baška admitted on Wednesday, November 23, that the previous government, led by his own Smer party, also monitored journalist Patrícia Poprocká (nee Ďurišková). Poprocká recently led the domestic news desk of the Pravda daily and was one three journalists who were revealed this week to have been bugged this year by the Military Defence Intelligence (i.e. military counterintelligence service), or VOS.

SNS announces Igor Štefanov will not be on its slate in 2012

Igor Štefanov, a former minister of construction and regional development and current MP from the Slovak National Party (SNS), will not be a candidate on the SNS slate in March 2012, SNS chairman Ján Slota told the TASR newswire on November 23. "As for the drafting of our party slate, there is one change due to Mr. Štefanov making a decision that he won't run in the general election any more," Slota said. When asked what led Štefanov to make that decision Slota replied that it was "personal reasons" ... and "we have accepted that" but refused to provide further details.

Slovakia’s ambassador to Hungary is summoned over citizenship issue

Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda told the media that Hungary’s “poor law on dual citizenship” that its parliament passed last year was the reason why Peter Weiss, Slovakia’s Ambassador to Hungary, was summoned by the State Secretary of the Hungarian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Zsolt Németh, on November 22, the SITA newswire reported. Neméth summoned Weiss in order to express Hungary's disapproval of the fact that ethnic-Hungarian entrepreneur Oliver Boldoghy was stripped of his Slovak citizenship after he acquired Hungarian citizenship. This is permitted under Slovakia's State Citizenship Act, which states that Slovak citizens granted citizenship of another country automatically lose their Slovak citizenship documents.
