Treasurer of Slovak Democratic and Christian Union steps down
Igor Kucej, the long-time treasurer of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) is resigning his position and will be temporarily replaced by the current director of the party’s central office, Milan Roman, the TASR newswire reported.
Villages asked to pay copyright fee for singing folk songs at events
SOZA, a group representing the interests of music copyright holders, has demanded that the village of Heľpa in Banská Bystrica Region pay €65 for singing folk songs during events at its Fašiangy celebration and on Mothers’ Day. Similar bills were sent to another village in the region, the Sme daily reported.
Eighteen foreign ambassadors announce support for Rainbow Pride event
Eighteen foreign ambassadors to Slovakia and the European Commission’s representative to Slovakia, Dušan Chrenek, have released a statement supporting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and its initiatives, including the Rainbow Pride rally that is scheduled for Bratislava on June 9, the TASR newswire reported.
Former union head is elected to lead the Slovak Medical Chamber
Marian Kollár, the former head of the medical trade unions who led doctors’ protest last year, was elected chair of the Slovak Medical Chamber (SLK) with the support of 51 of 76 delegates attending the chamber’s congress in Žilina on June 3, replacing Milan Dragula, the SITA newswire reported.
Nitra’s regional government’s deputy president resigns
The deputy president of the Nitra Self-Governing Region, Vladislav Borík, resigned from his post after being accused by the police ten days ago of manipulating three public procurements used to select firms to provide services to the regional government, the Sme daily reported.

Steelmakers help out in many ways
U.S. STEEL Košice (USSK), one of the biggest employers in eastern Slovakia, organised a corporate volunteer event, the sixth such annual event, on May 18 and 19. The steelmakers helped eleven non-profit organisations as part of the U.S. Steel for Košice event. As in previous years, about 500 employees of USSK, its subsidiaries and partner institutions volunteered their assistance.
The artistic Oravecs go public
YOUNG multi-instrumentalist Jerguš Oravec opened an exhibition of his father’s works in the House of Art (Dom umenia) in Bratislava on May 17. Jerguš, 23, invited renowned harmonica player Erich “Boboš” Procházka and the a cappella band Fragile to support the opening event.

SLOVAKIA’S prime fine arts museum, the Slovak National Gallery (SNG), is closing down three permanent exhibitions due to the accelerating deterioration of its premises. In spite of this, the gallery says that as an institution financed by taxes it will continue to present programmes and serve the general public.

Conference discusses media and CSR
CORPORATE responsibility to society and an individual company’s philanthropy are matters that often resonate with the general public. Companies that are trying to improve the environment in which their employees work and live and make society better can serve as a positive example for other employers. According to the organisers of a conference titled Social Responsibility of Media held in Bratislava on May 22, media coverage of corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts is important in Slovakia but it is not done as well as it should be by local outlets.
2011 Via Bona Awards announced
IN MID April the Pontis Foundation announced its twelfth annual awards for companies doing businesses in a responsible way. There were nine categories in the Via Bona Slovakia Awards, reflecting the continuing development of corporate responsibility and corporate philanthropy in Slovakia. One special honourable mention for the media was also awarded.The aim of the awards is to give public recognition to companies and entrepreneurs who support corporate social responsibility and corporate philanthropy in Slovakia. The foundation accepted 82 nominations for the 2011 Via Bona Slovakia Awards, from which a jury then selected the winners.
Ageing in the spotlight
WHILE in the past silver hair and wrinkles represented wisdom and experience, nowadays youth and beauty seem to be more greatly treasured by society. This trend has come despite the growing number of seniors and rising life expectancy. To change such attitudes, the European Union has declared 2012 to be the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. Its aim is to attract attention and inform those who make public policies such as public servants, state and local government bodies, and society as a whole about the ongoing demographic changes in Europe and also motivate seniors themselves to increase their participation in their communities and society at large.

Firms address the issue of ageing
AGEING has become a very lively topic in Europe as the share of older people in the population has been increasing along with the average lifespan of most Europeans. Ageing of the population raises challenges for governments in securing health care and social services for older citizens as well as how to keep seniors integrated into broader society. And companies also face a challenge in finding ways to use the skills and experience that older employees have acquired during their working careers and getting that knowledge passed on to younger employees.
Public holidays could be reduced
THE CABINET might reduce the number of public holidays in Slovakia. Prime Minister Robert Fico said the country has one of the largest numbers of public holidays of any country in the EU and that employers have repeatedly called for fewer holidays, the SITA newswire reported.
