Statistics Office: Industrial production up 2.6 percent y-o-y in May
The Industrial Production Index (IPP) was up 2.6 percent year-on-year in May 2013, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reported on Wednesday, July 10. This was largely due to the influence of increases in mining and quarrying by 7.6 percent and in industrial manufacturing by 2.8 percent.
Body of slain Slovak soldier returned home
The body of Slovak soldier Daniel Kavuliak, who was killed on Tuesday, July 9 during an attack at the Kandahar airfield in Afghanistan, was brought back to Slovakia on Wednesday evening.
Government approves FM Kažimír's package of amended laws
In the absence of Prime Minister Robert Fico, the government on Wednesday, July 10 approved a package of draft amendments to eight laws, which, according to the Finance Ministry, should reduce the administrative burden on businesses and help combat tax fraud.

TIS: Every fifth household offers at least one bribe per year
Every fifth household in Slovakia confessed to having offered bribes to public institutions at least once per year, with the most illegal payments occurring in the health-care sector, public offices and the police. This number is the third highest in the European Union, in which only one tenth of respondents admitted to paying bribes, according to the results of the 2013 Global Corruption Barometer published by the Transparency International (TI), carried out among 100,000 respondents from 107 countries.
Culture Ministry wants to attract foreign filmmakers to Slovakia
While foreign filmmakers often choose the capitals of neighbouring countries to shoot their films, they often avoid Bratislava. The Slovak Culture Ministry wants to change this practice through the amendment to the Act on the Audiovisual Fund, focusing on attracting more filmmakers to produce their work in Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported on July 9.
Government to seek strategic partner for state-run Trenčín companies
The government will start looking for a strategic partner for state-run repair companies Vojenský Opravárenský Podnik Trenčín and Letecké Opravovne Trenčín, with legal consultancy costs reaching altogether €360,000 in 2013 and 2014. The state should remain a 100-percent owner of both firms, according to the document that the government will discuss on July 10. If the state does not find an investor, the companies will have to lay off hundreds of employees, the SITA newswire reported.
OSCE inquires about incident in Moldava nad Bodvou
Slovakia will have to explain the incident in eastern Slovak town Moldava nad Bodvou that occurred in mid-June to international institutions. The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has asked the responsible authorities in Slovakia for a thorough investigation of the event. Slovakia should submit a report conducted by police officers on July 10, the Sme daily reported.
Antonio Tajani visits Slovak industrial companies
European Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship and Vice President of the European Commission Antonio Tajani met with several representatives of the Slovak government and visited some industrial companies active in Slovakia during his visit on July 9.
First Slovak soldier slain in Afghanistan
One Slovak soldier was killed at the Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan, with another two Slovaks suffering serious injuries and four others sustaining light injuries, Defence Minister Martin Glváč confirmed to the press on July 9. The injured soldiers’ conditions have stabilised, the minister said, as reported by the TASR newswire.
Off-duty police officer chased down by police
An officer with the Trnava district police, aged 30, wound up in handcuffs on Saturday, July 6, after being chased by police following his involvement in a car accident near the city of Nitra. TV JOJ informed that the driver was an off-duty police officer. During the chase, he demolished several crash barriers and police delivered three warning shots in an attempt to stop him.

NOVA sends Krajcer to regional election race to compete with Frešo
Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) defector and former culture minister Daniel Krajcer will run for the post of the head of Bratislava Self-Governing Region in the autumn regional elections. Chairman of the NOVA movement (which Krajcer joined recently) Daniel Lipšic officially introduced their candidate on Monday, July 8.
Galko receives signatures for session to recall Glváč
Former defence minister and current MP Ľubomír Galko (Freedom and Solidarity [SaS]) has collected the 30 signatures required to summon an extraordinary session of parliament to remove current Defence Minister Martin Glváč (Smer). However, the session will take place no sooner than in August, as many supporters of the recall are now on holiday. Galko plans to coordinate the next steps with all of them.
Slovak state secretary and Iran's Ambassador discuss detained paragliders
State secretary of the Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs Peter Burian met Vienna-based Iranian Ambassador to Slovakia Hassan Tajik to discuss resolving the case of the eight Slovak paragliders who have been detained in Iran for a month on suspicions of espionage. Their talks stressed the need for intensive communication and a constructive approach focused on bringing about a speedy resolution of the case.
