THE 45-SECOND recording of a phone conversation of journalist Tom Nicholson, which the Sme daily received in mid October, might have been made under the rule of the Iveta Radičová government (2010-2012).
Health Ministry to choose adviser for new hospital
THE HEALTH Ministry will announce a tender to find an adviser for a new university hospital in Bratislava, whose construction could be completed by 2016. The ministry will pay the adviser €900,000, without VAT. The competition should last until the end of January 2014.
Economic sentiment improved in October
BUSINESSES’ confidence in the Slovak economy improved in October. Compared with the previous month, economic sentiment improved by 1.9 points to 93.1 points. Yet, sentiment is still lower than last year when it stood at 93.5 points. Moreover, it lags behind the long-term average by 12.2 points, the SITA newswire reported.
Paška and Lykketoft warn against rise in radicalism
DEVELOPMENTS concerning standard political systems in Europe and the rise of populism and radicalism among new political entities were among the issues discussed by Slovak Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška and his Danish counterpart Mogens Lykketoft during his official visit to Slovakia on October 28.

Bohunice nuclear power plant passed WANO peer review
THE V2 Nuclear Power Plant in Jaslovské Bohunice, operated by Slovenské Elektrárne, has just been inspected by a team of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). The peer review was aimed at improvements of safety and reliability of the nuclear powerplant, the SITA newswire reported on October 29.
Schwarzenberg wins Czech vote in Slovakia
CZECHS taking part in the Czech general election at their embassy in Bratislava gave the highest number of votes to Karel Schwarzenberg's TOP 09 party, with the winning Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) ending up fifth, the TASR newswire reported.

US diplomats praised Roma integration efforts of three schools
A GROUP of US diplomats appreciated the approach of three primary schools in eastern Slovakia to integrate Roma children in the area of education. Representatives from US embassies to Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Serbia paid a visit to schools in Šarišské Michaľany, Petrovany (both in Prešov Region) and Veľká Ida (Košice Region) on October 25.
Lipšic to pay €10,000 in compensation for defamation
DANIEL Lipšic, leader of the New Majority-Agreement (NOVA) political movement, will have to pay €10,000 to judge Juraj Sopoliga as compensation for statements concerning anti-discrimination lawsuits of judges, the district court in Košice ruled on October 24. Lipšic considers the verdict “utterly absurd” and says he will appeal it, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia cannot rule out whether it was eavesdropped by US
THE WORKING dinner of leaders of the European Union held during a two-day summit in Brussels on October 24 featured a debate on the recently revealed information that the US has allegedly eavesdropped on 35 political leaders, embassies and other international offices, said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. He did not rule out that Slovak leaders might also have been wiretapped, the TASR newswire reported.
Frešo on top in regional election polling
TWO polls carried out in mid October show that the first round in regional elections in Bratislava Region, scheduled to take place on November 9, would be won by current governor of the region, Pavol Frešo of the Slovak Christian and Democratic Union (SDKÚ). He would be followed by Monika Flašíková-Beňová of Smer and Daniel Krajcer of New Majority-Agreement (NOVA) movement.

SEVERAL Slovak politicians have responded to the results of Czech parliamentary elections that took place on October 25 and 26.
Minorities: 'Dual citizenship ban is silly'
TOUTED as a matter of national pride, 42 people have had their Slovak citizenship revoked after they opted to acquire a Hungarian passport, and just a few hundred people in total have been affected by the ban on dual citizenship implemented by the first government of Prime Minister Robert Fico in 2010 – a law critics are calling both “discriminatory” and “silly”.
