Cvernovka commemorated
THE TEXTILE factory known colloquially as ‘Cvernovka’ (cverna means thread) had a long and illustrious history, which is now being shown in a series of period photographs and items. The plant, which launched its first production in 1902 and survived five political regimes, four generations and two world wars, was closed in 2003 through a bankruptcy proceeding. The current exhibition (and the accompanying book and documentary film planned for early next year) draws attention to this special Bratislava institution.

Getting old in Slovakia
IN THE MIDST of an election campaign (like the one currently unfolding in Slovakia) elderly people, traditionally the most disciplined group of voters, often find themselves at the centre of attention by campaigning politicians. Gifts, free concerts, debates and political meetings can offer some pensioners the chance for a real social outing, which can contrast significantly with the reality of their lives during the rest of the election cycle. So how do older people in Slovakia live?
Malware goes smart, too
IT SECURITY experts’ predictions that 2013 would see an increase in malware designed for mobile phones have come true. Experts say the rise of new and already known mobile malware will continue.“Expectations have been met; we register a higher amount of modifications of so-far known malware,” Gabriel Braniša, analyst at IT security company ESET, who specialises in malware for Android-based mobile devices, told The Slovak Spectator, adding that the first example of so-called ransomware, i.e. malicious software which blocks a device and requires a ransom to unblock it, has also surfaced.

Lending money rather than mobiles
MORE than one half, or 52 percent, of Slovaks would lend money and almost one third, or 29 percent, would not mind lending their car. But only every fourth Slovak is willing to lend a computer or a mobile. This is the outcome of the study called Mobile Life, carried out by TNS Slovakia, active in market research, global market information and business analysis. The unwillingness to lend money, cars, computers or mobiles increases along with age.
