Concern over unstable Czech election result
PRAGUE – Seven parties passed the threshold for entering the Czech Parliament during the October 25-26 elections, and the instability likely to result is giving pause in Slovakia.
Rázus monument unveiled in Bratislava
A MONUMENT to commemorate Slovak writer, journalist, politician and pastor Martin Rázus was unveiled on the embankment in Bratislava which bears his name, Rázusovo nábrežie, 125 years and 5 days after his birth, on October 24, 2013.

Jazz days saw foreign collaboration
THIS YEAR’S edition of Bratislava’s annual jazz festival once again brought three days of music performances, featuring not just local jazz musicians, but a plethora of foreign artists as well. Bratislava Jazz Days, which took place on October 25-27, also opened a competition usually meant for young Slovak talents to jazz musicians from other countries.
WB: Slovakia drops in ranking
SLOVAKIA’s business environment has worsened compared to last year according to the prestigious Doing Business ranking, which puts Slovakia at 49 in its 2014 edition, a six spot drop.
MFA sends welcome text messages
SLOVAKS travelling abroad have been receiving so-called welcome messages from the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry since the beginning of February. These messages contain the telephone number of a Slovak embassy in the country whose border the travellers have just crossed as well as of the non-stop service of the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Little passion for regional polls
CANDIDATES for governors of Slovakia’s eight self-governing regions, known by the Slovak-language acronym VÚC, have been focusing on luring the hearts of voters in the November 9 vote with billboard slogans and rallies. However, there is very little explanation on how decisions made at regional levels might impact the lives of citizens, whose lack of understanding contributes to low turnouts at regional elections, according to experts.
Telecom market to become more unified
THE EUROPEAN Commission is gradually arriving at a plan to create a single telecom market. It introduced on September 11 a plan to scrap roaming fees, give more rights to telecom operator customers and reduce red tape for firms active in the market. The Slovak Transport Ministry, responsible for the telecommunication sector, welcomes the changes, but says some details are missing.

IN MID October, the statue of Nácko was erected in Banská Štiavnica on Trotuár Avenue, a personality who, in all likelihood, never existed in real life.
O2 to change hands
THE FINANCIAL group PPF, led by Czech billionaire Petr Kellner, is finishing the acquisition of the Czech and Slovak branches of the mobile operator Telefónica, which provides telecom services and internet connection under the brand O2. The involved parties declined to comment on the information, but according to the Sme daily, the deal should be announced in the second half of November.
Croatian cuisine: Love for meat, tradition
MAKE small holes with a sharp knife to a round piece of steak or beef and fill them with salty pieces of garlic, smoked bacon and five pieces of clove, Jakša Muljačić said while passionately explaining the first steps for making Pašticada, a traditional Croatian dish. The Croatian ambassador to Slovakia placed the meat in a bowl and poured red wine, vinegar and Prošek, a sweet dessert wine from southern Dalmatia, saying that the meat needs to rest in this marinade overnight.
Slovaks made 80M hours of calls
SLOVAKS made 80 million hours of calls via their mobile phones and sent almost 993 million short and 17.6 million multimedia messages during the first half of 2013. The number of users of the public mobile service increased by 1 percent compared with the end of 2012, while those with post-paid contracts went up by 2 percent and those with pre-paid contracts decreased by 3 percent. These figures stem from data provided by mobile operators to Slovakia’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and which made them public on October 28.
Higher territorial units: What?
MANY Slovaks are more likely to vote in a televised talent show than in elections to the Slovakia’s eight self-governing regions, known by the Slovak-language acronym VÚC, despite the fact that decisions made at the level of VÚCs impact their lives more than yet another ‘star’ emerging on the television screen only to disappear in a year’s (or an hour’s) time.
Melos-Étos includes 10 premieres
MELOS-ÉTOS is a festival of contemporary classical music that will have its 12th anniversary this year. The event comprising 20 concerts and 83 musical and multimedia works will take place between November 8-14 in several venues of the Slovak capital. The main guest will be renowned Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho.
