GOVERNMENT Proxy for Roma Communities Peter Pollák is in favour of mandatory video recordings of all police crackdowns in order to prevent doubts over the appropriateness in the use of force in the future, the TASR newswire reported on January 10.
Presidential election to cost almost €11 million
TAXPAYERS will end up paying €10.78 million for the upcoming presidential election, according to a proposal drafted by the Interior Ministry that has been submitted for comments.
Slovak euro-bonds stir interest in market
SLOVAK government bonds, of the new 15-year benchmark euro-bond emission, were in demand during the January 10 auction. As many as 170 investors placed orders worth €4 billion, the Debt and Liquidity Management Agency (ARDAL) informed, as reported by the SITA newswire.

Bezák’s case discussed in Austria, rehabilitation rumours unconfirmed
THE CASE of the former Trnava Archbishop Róbert Bezák, who was forced to step down from his post under unclear circumstances in the summer of 2012, has recently garnered publicity in Austria and has stirred interest among Slovaks after rumours surfaced that Pope Francis was considering meeting Bezák and even rehabilitating him. This information however turned out to be ungrounded.

MILITARY Intelligence (VS) deputy head Róbert Tibenský is no longer facing police prosecution over accusations regarding his conduct during his term as a military attaché in Israel in 2008-2011.
Book examines modern totalitarian architecture
SLOVAKIA spent a significant part of the 20th century under totalitarian regimes, which is reflected in some of the architecture of the period. Such architecture remains controversial: though the buildings may have been built by oppressive regimes, the architecture itself was sometimes exceptional.
Volume of Slovak TV stations regulated
SLOVAK television should broadcast without fluctuations in volume as of the start of 2014, with Slovakia’s implementation of the Loudness Recommendation EBU (European Broadcasting Union) R-128. The Culture Ministry regulation became valid as of January 1, and is linked to a revision to the law on broadcasting and retransmission that became effective the same day, the SITA newswire wrote.
Church repaired
THE VIHORLAT Museum in the eastern-Slovak town of Humenné completed the reconstruction of the wooden church, which dominates its open-air museum, at the end of December. The damaged roof was replaced with new shingles.
Lawyer's murder still unsolved
THE POLICE are still working on several theories in a murder case that shook the country more than three years ago when prominent lawyer Ernest Valko was shot dead in his house in Limbach, near Bratislava. One now appears the most likely, according to Police Corps President Tibor Gašpar in response to recent media speculation pertaining to the case.

Twin killing closes tough year
ONE YEAR ago, Slovakia’s presence in Afghanistan was an abstract notion for many. By the end of 2013, it was anything but, as the Slovak armed forces suffered three fatalities as part of the Afghan mission. Most recently, two of three ISAF soldiers who were killed in a December 27 attack on a military convoy in Kabul, Afghanistan, were Slovaks. The third soldier was American.
Detainees resettle in Slovakia
THE LAST three of the 22 Uighur Chinese nationals to be transferred from the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center after being held by the United States since 2002 will try to build a new life in Slovakia. The US Department of Defense announced the transfer of Yusef Abbas, Saidullah Khalik, and Hajiakbar Abdul Ghuper, members of a persecuted Muslim ethnic minority in China, on December 31. While the US appreciated what it called Slovakia’s humanitarian gesture, China criticised the move, called the Uighurs terrorists and demanded their extradition to China.
Social entrepreneurship still in focus
THOUGH widely touted by the European Union as a means of reintegrating the long-term unemployed, the term “social companies” has negative connotations after a series of scandals related to such projects during Prime Minister Robert Fico’s first government (2006-10). That is not stopping the Labour Ministry from pushing social entrepreneurship as “a key tool to fight unemployment”.

Gemer churches ready for UNESCO
IN ADDITION to Slovakia’s historical and natural monuments already inscribed on the UNESCO Heritage List, churches in the Gemer and Abov regions are also preparing for inclusion on the list. One such church is the Annunciation of Our Lady in the municipality of Chyžné (in the district of Revúca) in central Slovakia.
User trends spur online ad growth
GREATER penetration of smart mobile devices and the growing coverage of mobile internet in Slovakia are preconditions for growth in online advertising. While investments in online advertising increased by more than 43 percent in 2012, the latest year where complete data is available, experts anticipate that growth continued last year and will do so in the coming months.
