Epiphany train ride
THE TRAIN operating as a tourist attraction on the track between Trenčianska Teplá and Trenčianske Teplice first set out on the rails on January 6, the holiday of Epiphany.The train made three trips in both directions that afternoon, starting at 13:00 from Trenčianska Teplá and at 13:40 from Trenčianske Teplice, Trenčianske Teplice Mayor Štefan Škultéty told the TASR newswire. The regular operation of the narrow-gauge railway started in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but was stopped on December 11, 2011 after more than 100 years, due to a lack of profitability.

Unemployment is the word of 2013
THE NEWS word of the year in 2013 was ‘unemployment’, with journalists having used it in 7,164 stories last year. It was followed by the name of Slovak Prime Minister ‘Robert Fico’, which appeared in 6,554 stories. ‘Saving’ was the third most used word, occurring in 4,079 pieces, based on a ranking of the most commonly used words conducted by the monitoring agency Newton Media, the SITA newswire wrote.

Education top priority for UN youth delegate
EDUCATION is the root of almost every major problem in Slovakia from unemployment to racism, says Hana Skljarszka, a 23-year-old sociology student, who now serves as Slovakia’s United Nations Youth Delegate. During her stay at the UN she and some other youth delegates tried to implement theses about the protection of non-heterosexual young people, she said. The Slovak Spectator spoke with Skljarszka about her impressions from the UN, her agenda and her activities as a delegate.

The president's speech
IVAN Gašparovič, who will be remembered more for his occasional slips of the tongue than intellectual depth, delivered his very last New Year’s presidential speech. The outgoing president thanked all who helped him “even in situations when some tried to trample on the human dignity of the president, when they ignored or intentionally falsely informed about the work of the president”. Yet, unfortunately, it was Gašparovič, the one-time right-hand man of the controversial three-time prime minister Vladimír Mečiar, who during his two terms in office set the presidential standards rather low. This is not to say the country’s experience with the presidential office cannot get any worse.
Fines catch up with builders
THE SUPREME Court has upheld an Antitrust Office verdict finding six construction companies in Slovakia guilty of forming a cartel when competing for a highway construction order in a public tender. The companies involved must pay an aggregate fine of nearly €45 million.
Public, politicians blog as businesses lag behind
IN A time when journalists were dismissive of bloggers the Sme daily decided to publish blogs on its home page back in 2004. Since then, nearly 27,000 bloggers have registered on the Sme blog system, a sign of the growing popularity of blogs among politicians and the general public, even as private companies continue to lag behind the trend.

15 candidates to run for president
FIFTEEN people submitted petitions for presidential candidacies backed by either 15,000 citizen signatures or 15 parliamentary deputies. The deadline elapsed midnight January 9. The number is the highest ever for presidential elections, the SITA newswire reported.
MPs questions legitimacy of contract addendum
THE ADDENDUM to the agreement over distribution of textbooks signed by the Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič might be at odds with law, according to MPs Lucia Žitňanská and Miroslav Beblavý, former members of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ). The MPs have already filed a motion with the Public Procurement Office (ÚVO). The ministry denies the allegations, the SITA newswire wrote on January 9.
