Police: Polish paedophile not relocated to Slovakia
DISPROVING rumours allegedly spread by an anonymous source in Poland that convicted Polish paedophile and murderer Mariusz Trynkiewicz, recently released from prison, was sent to Slovakia, Slovak Police President Tibor Gašpar confirmed on February 17 that the Pole is not in the country.
ARDAL sells more than €280 million in bonds
SLOVAKIA borrowed more than €280 million on the financial market on February 17, with bonds offered in two auctions, most of which were bought by foreign investors. In the first auction of bonds maturing in February 2023, securities worth €139 million were sold, of which foreign investors bought bonds for €134 million.
Regional auditor: Košice school wasted money
EMPLOYEES of the Office of the Main Auditor of Košice Region have confirmed corrupt and wasteful spending of €79,000 at a Košice school.
Two Slovenians sentenced for ‘Turkish truck’
TWO Slovenian citizens, Alen Z. and Sebastjan M. were sentenced to 23 and 20 years in prison, respectively, by the Trnava district court for financing and organising the transport of acetic anhydride from Slovakia to Turkey. The chemical is a precursor that, according to the prosecutor, could have been used for heroin production in Afghanistan, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovakia sends EU funds draft contract to Brussels
THE GOVERNMENT sent the draft Partnership Agreement for 2014-2020 to the European Commission for formal approval on February 14. It is a strategic document detailing how Slovakia will use EU money in the next programming period.
Average Slovak pensioner gets almost €400 a month
THE AVERAGE monthly retirement pension in Slovakia at the end of January of this year was€399.3. Compared to the end of January of last year, it increased by €12.1, the SITA newswire reported from the data published by the state-run social security provider Sociálna Poisťovňa.

Slovakia lags in foreign investments; EcoMin says country still attractive
SLOVAKIA lags slightly behind the Czech Republic in direct foreign investments, according to the results of a study carried out by the consulting firm Ernst&Young (EY). The Economy Ministry pointed out, however, that according to the study results, Slovakia placed better than the Czech Republic in the number of new jobs, with over 5,500 new jobs created in the Czech Republic compared to almost 6,300 in Slovakia.
Union: Volkswagen nixes 4-percent salary cut
THE MANAGEMENT of the Slovak branch of German carmaker Volkswagen is no longer considering cutting the salaries of its staff by 4 percent this year, employee trade union head Zoroslav Smolinský announced after negotiations with employee representatives on February 14.
722 people lose Slovak passports due to controversial Citizenship Act
IN THE three and a half years that the State Citizenship Act has been in effect (June 17, 2010-February 4, 2014), it has deprived a total of 722 people of their Slovak citizenship, according to the statistics of the Interior Ministry, as reported by the TASR newswire.
Slovak hockey team loses to Russia 0:1
THE SLOVAK national ice hockey team failed to score a point against Russia at the Olympics in Sochi, despite standing firm until late in the game, including overtime. After a 0:0 tie, two Russian stars, Alexander Radulov and Ilya Kovalchuk, scored in the shootout against goalie Ján Laco, whose performance was the surprise of the match, while Slovak players Michal Handzuš and Tomáš Tatar missed.
Finance Minister praises VAT collection
THE STATE is forecast to have collected €261 million more in taxes and levies in 2013 than expected in the previous estimate of November, Finance Minister Peter Kažimír reported on February 15, citing data from the latest tax prognosis drawn up by the Ministry's Financial Policy Institute (IFP).
Two parties select candidates for European parliament
THE SLOVAK Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and the Hungarian Community Party (SMK) have selected their candidates for the European parliamentary elections, taking place in May. Slovakia has 13 deputies in the European Parliament.
Slovakia keeps Tokaj brand
SLOVAKIA’s producers of Tokaj wine can continue to use the brand name after the European Court of Justice (ECJ) declared that the listing of the Slovak wine name “Vinohradnícka oblasť Tokaj” in the E-Bacchus register of protected designations of origins “does not constitute an actionable measure”.
AmCham criticises changes to tenders
THE ADOPTION of changes to the public procurement law together with an amendment to protect vineyards and wine regions across Slovakia has elicited mixed reactions. The American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia (AmCham) asked President Ivan Gašparovič to veto the new measures, which it says were passed non-transparently and without public discussion. It also pointed to potential conflict with European Union rules. The Agricultural Ministry, however, deflected the criticism, saying that AmCham does not understand the issue.
Prešov theatre turns 70
SEVENTY years ago, the first premiere of a play on a professional stage in the eastern-Slovak city of Prešov took place on January 30. The piece was a classical comedy by Slovak author Ferko Urbánek, Škriatok / Goblin.
Single health insurer plan stalls
ONE PET project of Prime Minister Robert Fico’s government, the re-establishment of a unitary system of public health insurance, which was meant to be in place this year, has been pushed back indefinitely.
ICT dual education launched
THE SLOVAK arm of the German IT company T-Systems is inspired by the experiences of its parent company and has launched a pilot dual education project with the Secondary Electro-Technical School in Košice. The first 30 students began attending information communication technologies (ICT) lectures in September.
