Slovak National Library publishes oldest book in Slovakia
THE SLOVAK National Library (SNK) has published a unique book within its Sources to the Spiritual History of Slovakia series, the Bardejov Catechism, which dates back to 1581. The book is considered to be the oldest from the territory of Slovakia written in the local codified language of Slovakised Czech.
SCC group touts ethical business
AS NEWS of unethical business practices frequently dominates the headlines, a group of businesses has banded together to encourage more ethical behaviour. The founding members of the Slovak Compliance Circle (SCC) say their group will work to combat negative impressions of the business community by promoting ethical behaviour and compliance.

Nitra prosecutors reject criticism
THE NITRA district prosecutor’s office disagrees with General Prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár’s criticism of two Nitra district prosecutors who handled the case of a brutal attack on the owner and patrons of the Mariatchi bar in downtown Nitra, which occurred in 2013 but was not reported by local media until January 2014.
Industry grew again in December
INDUSTRY in Slovakia in December 2013 again saw double-digit growth. The data of the Statistics Office show that industrial production in the last month of 2013, excluding the impact of working days, grew 12.2 percent year-on-year, slowing from 12.6 percent in November. This was only the second double-digit growth rate of the Slovak industry over the past year and one of the highest monthly growth rates in recent years, the SITA newswire reported.
Challenges of cultivating IT specialists
IT JOBS traditionally rank among the highest paid in Slovakia, and people with degrees from IT educational institutions are almost certain to find work despite the country’s 13-percent unemployment rate. But IT’s rapid development means the labour market needs IT schools to produce graduates who have not just theoretical, but practical, working knowledge of the latest technologies.
Top justice post selection to change
THE PRESIDENT could play an important role in selecting the top justice if one of the proposals outlined by Prime Minister Robert Fico as part of his planned changes in the judiciary makes it through the government and parliament. Critics, however, opine that as the presidential election nears, Fico is only talking the talk, and that he might prove less eager to actually walk the walk.

Slovaks go west
SLOVAK IT company Asseco Central Europe is expanding into western Europe. It is acquiring three sister companies in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, sheltered by Asseco Solutions AG, for €13.8 million, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported in mid-January.

THANKS TO modern technology, suspicions at the Gemer-Malohunt Museum in Rimavská Sobota have been confirmed. The big egg-shaped globe hidden under layers of paper and linen is actually an eggshell.
Yad Vashem honours 5 Slovaks
“WHOEVER saves one life, it is as though he had saved the entire world,” Israeli Ambassador to Slovakia Alexander Ben-Zvi said, quoting the Talmud during his speech awarding the title “Righteous Among the Nations” to Slovaks for their efforts to save Jews during World War II.
Kotleba blocks EU funds
SOME schools in the Banská Bystrica region might not be able to pay for new equipment from EU funds after the regional government cut its support for EU projects. The Education Ministry says students will be the ones who suffer in the end, while some suggest that the anti-EU sentiments of the new regional governor are behind the changes.
Hauliers on strike alert
THE SLOVAK Road Hauliers Association (UNAS), currently on strike alert, convened a meeting of Nitra region road hauliers in Nitra to inform them about UNAS demands concerning new legislation on road transport, which has been in effect since January, the TASR newswire reported on February 9.

Slovakia goes electronic - gradually
SLOVAKIA’S public administration has finally begun its transition from paper to a fully electronic system, with the state promising to reduce red tape for private individuals and businesses. Though the system is in its initial stages, state bodies will have until November 2016 to digitise their systems.
IT start-up gets €30,000
INCUBATOR hub:raum Krakow, created by the telecom company Deutsche Telekom and supported by Slovak Telekom, has supported the Slovak start-up Thapir, developing an app for smart phones with €30,000. The app automatically searches for events in the locality of the user based on geo-location technology, Slovak Telekom said in mid-February.
