High-profile corruption case in court

Put people where they best fit
Societies will be competing not only for natural resources but also strive to attract the best talent, says Vladimír Šucha, the director general of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), a body tasked with providing scientific and technical advice to the European Commission. He took up the post at the beginning of 2014. Šucha believes that the educational system and the society in general should be tuned to recognise talents and put people in places where they best fit so that “we have the fulfilment of the individual while the society benefits from it too”. The Slovak Spectator spoke to Šucha about his new job, the education system, brain drain and brain circulation as well as the need for diversity in societies.
Tram to Vienna returned to Bratislava streets for a day
ONE HUNDRED years after it first opened, the tram that once connected Bratislava (then called Prešporok, Pressburg or Pozosny) with Vienna resumed service on the streets of the Slovak capital to celebrate the anniversary.
Slovakia and Austria to cooperate in dual education
AFTER German and Swiss chambers of commerce in Slovakia introduced their projects of cooperation between schools and businesses, Austria has introduced its own proposal to increase employment among young people. The two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding to support the establishment of a dual education system, which unlike in Slovakia, has a strong tradition in German-speaking countries.

FEBRUARY concerts of the Slovak Philharmonic (SF) are conducted by its chief conductor, Emmanuel Villaume. This is nothing unusual, but it starts to be less obvious when you consider that he also heads the orchestra of the Dallas/Winspear Opera House. Thus, he conducts three couples of concerts in Bratislava, then flies to Oman with the SF and then he will return for a series of concerts in May.

Wages up in December
THE AVERAGE nominal monthly wage in December 2013 surged in the repair of motor vehicles by 10.1 percent, to €890. The average wage also marked a year-on-year increase in most monitored sectors of economy, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reported on February 11.
Paprika Žitava to be protected by the EU
THE EUROPEAN Commission has approved entering a name Paprika Žitava/Žitavská paprika in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications.
Inflation at record low
SLOVAKIA recorded its lowest annual inflation in January since the fall of the communism when the prices of goods stayed at the same level as in January 2013. The core inflation stood at 0.4 percent, while the net inflation at only 0.2 percent, the Statistics Office reported on February 13. In monthly terms the consumer prices rose 0.2 percent.
Kotleba calls European investigators on education minister
BANSKÁ Bystrica regional Governor Marian Kotleba says that the Education Ministry made a mistake when it approved most of the modernisation projects submitted by several schools in the region. He has sent a letter to the Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič as well as the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) which he asked to investigate the ministry.
State held secret talks about Slovak Telekom sale
THE GOVERNMENT already has a plan to sell its 49-percent state stake in the telecoms operator Slovak Telekom (ST), after the state secretly signed a memorandum with Deutsche Telekom, the majority owner.
Justice Minister appeals Olejník corruption convictions
FORMER Smer deputy in Košice František Olejník will not go to prison though two courts have already confirmed he is guilty of corruption. Justice Minister Tomáš Borec has submitted a special appeal to the Supreme Court. He also decided that Olejník does not have to start serving his prison sentence, the Sme daily reported in its February 14 issue.
CORRECTED: GDP growth accelerated to 1.5 percent in 4Q2013
SLOVAKIA’S economic growth stood at 1.5 percent in the last quarter of 2013, up by 0.4 percent compared to the previous quarter. After seasonal adjustment, GDP rose by 1.3 percent, according to the flash estimate issued by the Statistics Office on February 14.
