Ministries transpose EU directives
THE ENVIRONMENT Ministry will be the busiest of Slovak ministries in transposing EU directives during the upcoming period of time. The Cabinet’s Office proposes that this ministry prepares transposition of 18 out of 37 directives of the European Parliament and the Council which were published in the Official Journal of the European Union between August 1, 2014 and January 31, 2014. The implementation of some directives has already been prepared, the SITA newswire wrote.
KDH-Smer deal a campaign topic

Will Slovakia get corporate liability law?
AFTER trying to adopt a corporate liability law for nearly 10 years and receiving criticism for failing to sufficiently address the issue, the Justice Ministry introduced the latest version of the bill last year, hoping to adopt it in the first half of 2014. The business community has raised several objections to the law, claiming that it goes too far.

Slovak films win awards, compete in Sofia
SLOVAK film director Dušan Hanák received the Award for Special Contribution to World Cinematography at the International Film Festival (IFF) in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia. The prize was awarded by the administration of the capital and by the Sofia IFF; so far, 27 filmmakers won, including names like Peter Greenaway, Volker Schlöndorf, Wim Wenders, Jiří Menzel and Nikita Michalkov.

PEOPLE who inform the Antitrust Office of the Slovak Republic on cartel agreements may get a reward. This stems from a draft amendment to the law on protection of economic competition, which the cabinet approved on February 26, the TASR newswire reported.

Beavers are back in Slovakia
BEAVERS are making a return to Slovakia after more than a century of absence, with fishermen spotting the animals in early February 2014 along a stretch of the Váh River in the Stredné (Central) Považie region in western Slovakia. NINE years after Slovakia moved to a three-pillar pension scheme, the government has spelled out the rules on how payments from the so-called second, private pillar will be carried out, and just a fraction of the 3,000 pensioners entitled to tap their money starting in January 2015 will actually be able to withdraw all of their savings immediately.

New election code debated
NEW legislation regulating public elections will be discussed by parliament as early as at its next session in March, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák said during a discussion programme broadcast by the Slovak Radio February 8. The bill was drafted in the summer of 2013.
Report notes problems with judiciary
ABUSE of power by judicial figures, low public trust in the judiciary and continued societal discrimination and violence against Roma were the most serious human rights violations in Slovakia, according to the United States Department of State. Prison overcrowding and civil defamation suits filed by members of the political and judicial elite against the press in Slovakia are also cited in the annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2013, published by the US authorities.
