Lajčák: We're close to seeing armed conflict in Crimea
THE SITUATION in Ukraine's Crimea is coming increasingly close to an armed conflict, and if this continues, we may find ourselves under circumstances similar to the Cold War, Slovakia's Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák said on the public-service RTVS on March 9.

A LOW-capacity electric bus for potential use in the Slovak capital was introduced at the Hroboňova Street depot of the Bratislava Transport Company (DPB) in mid-February.
Hundreds of illegal findings discovered
POLICE seized hundreds of archaeological items from a variety of periods and locations when raiding the home of a young man. The 22-year-old man from Boleráz, close to the town of Trnava in western Slovakia, has so far refused to reveal where he found the items, which make up the biggest seizure of illegally obtained archaeological findings in Slovakia’s history. An archaeologist happened to see the young man near the railway tracks in the municipality of Šelpice, scanning the area with a metal detector. He warned the youth that what he was doing was illegal and he called the police.
2013 rich in new legal norms
THE YEAR 2013 brought changes to Slovakia’s legislation with expected significant impacts on the country and its economy. Legislators adopted new laws to address tax evasion, but also a reduced corporate income tax and the new tax licenses. Other legal norms deemed important by lawyers or having an impact on society include acts on government and personal data protection, and the revision to the Act on Collective Bargaining.
Public procurement law keeps changing
THOUGH Slovakia’s public procurement legislation underwent significant changes just last year, the law is set to change again. The European Parliament approved new public procurement rules in January, and European Union member states have two years to incorporate them into their national legislation.
Fico's competitors agree to unite in second round
IN THE closely watched first presidential debate, just two days after the official campaign began, the four candidates pledged to unite against Prime Minister Robert Fico in the second round of the election. But with a little more than a week before voters go to the polls, it is becoming less clear who will face Fico in the run-off.

Matica issues text vilifying Roma
MATICA Slovenská, Slovakia’s oldest cultural heritage institution, funded by the state budget, has published a text promoting Jozef Tiso, president of the Nazi-allied wartime Slovak state, and vilifying Roma, in a report on a conference devoted to the country’s 20 years of independence.
Conference spurs debate
SOME 30 people gathered on Pilárikova Street in Bratislava to show their disapproval of violence committed against homosexuals in Uganda as the Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson spoke nearby on March 4. Turkson, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, was among the favourites in the last papal vote. He was speaking at an International Conference called “The Catholic Church and Human Rights”.
Hauliers threaten with strike
HAULIERS in Slovakia appear set to go on strike over changes which, as of January 2014, increased the number of tolled roads. The Slovak Union of Motor Carriers (UNAS) has announced it will issue a general strike due to concerns that the Transport Ministry will not fulfil its promise to make changes to the toll system. The deadline was set on March 7.

SLOVAK fashion got some visibility outside the country’s borders in mid-February at the 2014 International Fashion Showcase in London.

THE FIRST premiere in the Slovak Chamber Theatre (SKD) in Martin took place 70 years ago, on January 22, 1944. The theatre troupe that evolved from a Slovak Choir into a professional drama company, chose the piece Philip II by Belgian playwright Emile Verhaeren, which was directed by Andrej Bagar.
