Large investments to get aid more easily
COMPANIES investing at least €200 million in Slovakia will no longer have to wait for the government to approve their request for state incentives as of May due to an amendment passed in parliament on March 25. The opposition, however, questions the transparency of the changes, as they were passed as part of another, unrelated law. It also suggests that the new rules are tailored for one specific company.

Investors sceptical about boom
FOREIGN investors do not expect Slovakia to experience an economic boom this year, according to a survey carried out by the German-Slovak Chamber of Commerce (SNOPK) in February among 196 companies. The results showed that most investors do not evaluate this year’s economic development better than they did last year.
High speed internet in remote villages
THE STATE has not fulfilled its plan to bring high speed internet to remote villages so far. While it planned to do so already in 2013, it has not even completed the tender, the Hospodárske Noviny economic daily reported in mid-February. The winner of the state order with the price tag of €213 million financed from EU funds will build fibre-optic networks and install broadband internet in 700 villages across Slovakia.
Slovaks connect during holidays
AS MUCH as 41 percent of Slovaks spending their holidays abroad want to enjoy their summer rest and not be stressed by news on the internet or emails. The remaining 59 percent cannot imagine a holiday without the internet, according to an online survey by NMS Market Research and the advisor Heureka.sk. The study considered a sample of about 2,200 respondents shopping online last year, the SITA newswire reported.

Cloud makes its way in Slovakia
WHILE the cloud and cloud services have been gaining popularity in Slovakia, a lack of trust in the technology is discouraging some companies from switching over to the cloud. Nevertheless, data centre operators and cloud service providers in Slovakia believe that ever increasing data and financial savings will persuade more firms to head for the cloud.
NBS expects GDP to rise
SLOVAKIA’S GDP is estimated to rise by 2.4 percent in 2014, up by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous updated prognosis the Slovak National Bank (NBS) released in January. In 2015 the GDP growth is expected to accelerate to 3.3 percent, and to 3.5 percent in 2016, which is in accordance with the January prognosis.

EU leaders congratulate Kiska on presidency
EUROPEAN Commission President José Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy congratulated Andrej Kiska on his election as Slovak president, and said that they believe that he will contribute towards resolving challenges faced by Slovakia and the EU.

Fico’s presidential Waterloo
PRIME MINISTER Robert Fico will have to swallow a bitter political pill in the next few days after he saw his presidential dream vanquished by a man he had aggressively targeted as a greenhorn and an usurer, and accused of being a Scientologist. Fico was hoping his ruling Smer party could control all the key political posts in the country. Instead he was defeated by a man without any previous political experience.

ANDREJ Kiska will be the president of Slovakia for the next five years, the official results published by the Statistics Office on March 30 show.

ANDREJ Kiska will be the president of Slovakia for the next five years. Kiska, who is the first-ever independent candidate with no political background whatsoever to win the presidential election, received 59.39 percent of the vote, while Prime Minister Robert Fico, the official candidate of the ruling Smer party, garnered the support of 40.61 percent of the voters, according to the official results announced by the Central Election Commission on March 30. The term of President Ivan Gašparovič’s term ends in June.
VW on strike alert
EMPLOYEE representatives in Volkswagen Slovakia (VW SK) announced a strike alert on March 21 over the lack of results in collective bargaining with the company’s management.
Amendment in second reading
THE CONSTITUTIONAL amendment drafted by Smer and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) containing judiciary reforms and a new definition of marriage has advanced to the second reading. It was backed by 103 MPs out of 126 present. The ruling party, however did not support the judiciary-related constitutional amendments drafted by opposition MPs even though they were submitted to parliament earlier, the SITA newswire reported.
