Prosecutor’s Office drops charges against ex-tax director Mikulčík
THE KOŠICE I District Prosecutor’s Office on March 25 dropped the charges pressed by a police investigator against former Tax Directorate head Miroslav Mikulčík for a “serious crime related to a violation of duties in handling the property of others” involving the controversial relocation of the Tax Directorate office in Košice to new premises.
NBS: Slovak GDP likely to rise 2.4 percent in 2014
SLOVAKIA’S GDP is estimated to rise by 2.4 percent in 2014, which amounts to growth of 0.1 percentage point higher than the Slovak Central Bank’s (NBS) January prognosis, NBS Governor Jozef Makúch said at a press conference on March 25. GDP growth is expected to accelerate to 3.3 percent in 2015 and to 3.5 percent in 2016, in accordance with the original January prognosis.
Justice Minister Borec survives no-confidence vote
THE OPPOSITION’S initiative to dismiss Justice Minister Tomáš Borec was unsuccessful, as only 50 out of 131 MPs present voted for his ouster at a special parliamentary session on March 25. Borec faced the no-confidence motion due to issuing an appeal in the case of convicted former Košice city councillor František Olejník.
Gašparovič to speak on public RTVS channel ahead of pre-election debate
THE PUBLIC Radio and Television of Slovakia, RTVS, proposed that President Ivan Gašparovič make an announcement concerning the upcoming second round of the presidential election in its March 26 broadcast, after the main evening news.
Twenty-nine slates qualify for EP election, with 333 candidates
THE CENTRAL electoral committee has registered 29 parties for the upcoming election to the European Parliament (EP), containing a total of 333 candidates, including 80 women, Eva Chmelová of the Central Electoral Committee told the TASR newswire on March 25.

CAMPAIGN FEVER is spreading as Prime Minister Robert Fico faces philanthropist Andrej Kiska in the presidential election second round run-off March 29. Surprising statements in recent days indicate it may be getting to the candidates, including those already out of the race.
State suspends costly purchase of sugar and grain
THE ADMINISTRATION of State Material Reserves (SŠHR) has suspended the deliveries of grain and sugar from the company Montir, which belongs to a co-owner of J&T financial group, Igor Rattaj, after several media outlets reported about overpriced state purchases. The state administration clerks have refused to explain why they bought overpriced agricultural commodities, the Sme daily reported in its March 25 issue.
Judiciary reform, protection of traditional marriage amendment advances to second reading
THE CONSTITUTIONAL amendment drafted by Smer and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) containing judiciary reforms and a definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman, has advanced to the second reading. It was backed by 103 MPs out of 126 present.
Dubovcová finds flaws in police investigation of shooting
OMBUDSWOMAN Jana Dubovcová has filed two motions over a disputed police operation from June 2013, in which the police fired shots at a car in an attempt to detain a criminal suspected of two murders. Instead, the police detained a group of four students who had nothing to do with the shooting.
Kňažko a no-show at conference to endorse Kiska, Procházka leaves choice to voters
A JOINT press conference with three presidential candidates - philanthropist Andrej Kiska, independent MP Radoslav Procházka and former actor and Velvet Revolution leader Milan Kňažko – deviated from what had originally been planned. The two candidates who were eliminated in the first round were to publicly support Kiska at the press conference before the run-off held on March 29. However, Kňažko failed to attend, while Procházka called on voters to make their own decision, the Sme.sk website reported.
Temporary Roma patrols created in Huncovce
ROMA patrols will be introduced in Huncovce, near Kežmarok, after an incident involving local Roma inhabitants and non-Roma football players that occurred on March 22. The patrols, which should ensure order and safety in the Roma community and its surroundings, will be composed of unemployed Roma, according to an agreement between Government Proxy for Roma Communities Peter Pollák and local mayor Jozef Majerčák.
J&T strengthens position in EPH
THE SHAREHOLDER structure has changed in the Czech company Energy and IndustrialHolding (EPH), which among others is the co-owner of the Slovak gas utility SPP and regional power distribution company in central Slovakia Stredoslovenská Energetika.
17% of Slovaks admit paying for undeclared services in 2013
ROUGHLY one-sixth of Slovaks admitted that they acquired goods or services that had something to do with undeclared work last year, following the results of the latest Eurobarometer survey, as reported by the TASR newswire.
