KDH to elect new caucus head after Easter
A NEW chairman for the Christian Democratic Movement’s (KDH) parliamentary caucus will emerge from the caucus' meeting after Easter, the party's council decided at its April 5 session, held in the town of Bojnice, the TASR newswire reported.

Justifying injustice
LESS than a week after it became clear that Robert Fico will not yet be able to add the presidency to his collection of personal political powers, the ruling Smer party nominated five candidates without any previous experience in constitutional law for 12-year terms with the country’s Constitutional Court, while overlooking experts with extensive international working backgrounds. Those who even for a millisecond believed that Fico, the failed presidential candidate, actually meant his comment that he was losing patience with the troubled judiciary and that his promises on cleaning up the sector were genuine, were terribly wrong.
Disputed law revised
THE LAW on personal data protection will change after being in effect for less than a year, as the government has responded to employers’ complaints that it is impossible to implement in practice. Though employers say parts of the law are still problematic, they consider the revised legislation an improvement.
Fate of Bratislava airport unclear
THE TRANSPORT Ministry has not yet decided on how Bratislava’s M. R. Štefánik Airport will operate in the future. The ministry is still analysing the pros and cons of a possible long-term lease of Slovakia’s biggest airport to a private operator via a concession, the SITA newswire wrote on April 7.
Upper Nitra Library sets record during Week of Slovak Libraries
THE WEEK of Slovak Libraries, which began on March 31, saw libraries around the country intensify their activities. The Upper Nitra Library organised a host of events, with free registration for children, an “amnesty on fees” for late books and a discussion with local author, photographer and TASR newswire editor Pavol Remiaš.

THE RECENT premiere of the dance performance titled Objekty Výskumu / Objects of Research brought elements of innovation to Slovak contemporary dance/physical theatre. The performance, choreographed and directed by Petra Fornayová and dan-ced by Soňa Ferienčíková and Jana Tereková, is based on contrasts: the inner versus the outer world, outside impacts versus inner feelings.
Polymath Matej Bel born 330 years ago
FAMOUS Slovak-Hungarian polymath, regional studies scientist, teacher and rector Matej Bel was born on March 22, 1684 in Očová. Matej is featured on the UNESCO calendar, has a memorial room in Očová and the university in Banská Bystrica is named after him.
Bulgarian cuisine: Lamb, roses and red wine
SISTERS Valeria and Isabela Hadjiyska, along with Tsvetelina Gencheva, the director of the Bulgarian elementary and high school in Bratislava, who wore a black blouse richly decorated with Bulgarian folk motifs, were carefully placing hardboiled eggs into bowls with red, blue, yellow and green food colouring. In order to complement the Bulgarian embassy’s efforts to bring Bulgarian cuisine and culture to the Slovak audience, they decorated the eggs using different techniques passed down through families to the young to preserve the spirit of Easter.

THE 10th anniversary of Slovakia’s NATO membership has come as the military alliance considers future strategy in the wake of Russia’s invasion of the Crimean peninsula. Now a stable member of this 28-member club, for Slovakia this was not always a given.
Maďarič leaves deputy chair post
CULTURE Minister Marek Maďarič will resign from the post of Smer’s deputy chairman at the party’s next session, but he will keep his ministerial post. The decision came in response to the presidential elections, which saw Prime Minister Robert Fico lose to philanthropist Andrej Kiska. Maďarič headed Fico’s campaign. Other Smer members, however, say that he may return to the leadership position.
Toll scheme changes
THE ELECTRONIC toll collection system has undergone an extensive overhaul, with the network of tolled roads expanded and new tariffs that target the environmental friendliness of trucks. However, after truckers threatened to strike and complained that the burden which the new scheme puts on their shoulders is too heavy, the state lightened its grip on the reins, leading to complaints from municipalities about the disruption cargo transport causes to everyday lives.

Bratislava sold stake in SPaP
THE BRATISLAVA municipality is selling its 7-percent stake in the shipping company Slovenská Plavba a Prístavy (Slovak Shipping and Ports - SPaP) to its majority owner, Budamar Transport Limited, for €800,000. Bratislava municipal deputies voted for the sale in late March, the Sme daily reported.Several deputies expected higher proceeds from the transaction, in the range of €1 million to €4.5 million, due to the undistributed €14 million profit that the company has maintained. The Bratislava municipality claims that the selling price is close to two experts’ estimates, which neared €700,000.

SLOVAKIA’S central bank is likely to receive more supervisory powers over other financial institutions in Slovakia. This will be possible due to the amendment to the Bank Act passed by the government on April 9, through which it will implement a number of European Union directives designed to ensure greater supervision over banks by supervisory bodies, the TASR newswire reported.The new regulatory framework will concern all banks in the EU.

Capital integrates public transit system
AFTER a bumpy start, the integrated transportation system of Bratislava Region was finally launched in mid-2013, enabling commuters to travel on one pre-paid ticket via train, bus or any means of Bratislava’s city transport. While the system was first put into operation for routes to the Záhorie region, the serviced area will be extended in the second phase to cover the whole Bratislava Region and selected municipalities of Trnava Region.
