Terchová will ask for state aid
RESCUERS have already searched 49 car wracks in Vrátna Dolina, a valley in the Malá Fatra mountains, but found no casualties related to the July 21 deluge. They, however, still cannot definitively say there have been no deaths as there are still stone landslides that are two to three metres high, the Sme daily reported in its July 24 issue.
Čentéš case has finally moved forward
THE CONSTITUTIONAL Court will deal with the objection filed by Jozef Čentéš on December 28, 2012, in which he complained about violating his basic right when then president Ivan Gašparovič refused to appoint him to the general prosecutor post. The decision was passed by the first senate composed of Ladislav Orosz, Ľudmila Gajdošíková and Marianna Mochnáčová at a non-public session, the SITA newswire reported on July 23.
Kiska supports tougher sanctions
THE SITUATION in Ukraine dominated the talks between Slovak President Andrej Kiska and his German counterpart Joachim Gauck on July 23.
PMÚ approves acquisition of ElectroWorld
THE ANTITRUST Office (PMÚ) has definitely approved the acquisition of ElectroWorld premises by the company Nay. The firm will get 26 premises, three of which are in Slovakia, the rest in the Czech Republic.
Matovič calls for publishing the whole recording
IGOR Matovič, chair of the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) party, has called on Radoslav Procházka to agree with releasing the entire recording of their hour-long conversation in order to eliminate any doubts the recording has been edited to twist Procházka’s statements.
MH-17
THE TRAGEDY of flight MH-17 stirred several reactions in Slovakia. There was compassion. Among some, there was some disappointment with a government reluctant to take a firm stand, and willing to still consider Russian companies as suitable investors in such fields as energy. There was a bit of a surprise at the number of people ready to listen to and spread the arguments of Kremlin propaganda (although a recent poll showing that over 80 percent of Slovaks feel Ukrainians should decide about their own future without Russian meddling is somewhat comforting).
Police search Slovenské Elektrárne
SLOVAKIA’S largest electricity company, Slovenské Elektrárne, had some uninvited guests on July 23 when the Slovak police came to the company’s headquarters as well as other facilities seeking documents pertaining to the privatisation of the company back in 2006. Amid continued talk of a sell off by its Italian majority owner Enel the timing of the raid is powering a wave of questions and speculation.
Slovakia’s debt reached historic high in March
THE DEBT of Slovakia reached its highest level ever in the first quarter of the year. It stood at 58.4 percent of GDP, which amounts to €42.3 billion, the Eurostat statistics office informed. Regarding the country’s commitments to the European Union as well as investors, it will be more important, however, to see what the debt will be at the end of the year, the Sme daily reported in its July 23 issue.
Police search SE for privatisation documents
POLICE searched the offices of Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) for documents connected to the privatisation of the firm, Economy Ministry spokesperson Miriam Žiaková said. In addition to SE’s headquarters in Bratislava, police conducted their July 23 search in the firm’s locations in Prievidza, Trenčín and Mochovce.
Comenius University among best in CWUR
COMENIUS University in Bratislava has placed among the top 1,000 universities around the world, a recent Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) list showed. It placed 732nd and was the only Slovak school to appear in the ranking, the SITA newswire reported on July 22.

Cars trapped after landslides in north-central Slovakia, no fatalities
AFTER the heavy storm on the evening of July 21 saw torrential rains and even landslides to some parts of Slovakia, 21 people reported their cars trapped in the Vrátna Dolina valley close to the municipality of Terchová.
Procházka confirms authenticity of the recording
CHAIRMAN of the Sieť party Radoslav Procházka confirmed the authenticity of the recording published earlier on July 22 on the Sme.sk website featuring a voice resembling his and containing statements that pertain to claims about murky financing of his presidential campaign. It also suggests that the campaign cost significantly more than the €250,000 he actually reported publicly.

VIA IURIS judicial watchdog conducted a monitoring and analysis exercise last year in which it found that as many as 30 percent of newly-appointed judges have close family ties with incumbent judges or court employees.
Man with life sentence unsuccessful at human rights court
ROBERT Čačko who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2007 has failed to convince the European Court of Human Rights (EHCR) that a provision of the European Convention on Human Rights concerning a ban on torture was violated by the sentence.
Law requiring licensing of non-banking lenders in the works
NON-banking lenders will not be allowed to do business in Slovakia without a licence issued by the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), the country’s central bank. This stems from the draft amendment to the law on consumer loans, which the Finance Ministry submitted to interdepartmental review. The change aims to increase transparency and performance of control on the market with consumer loans, the SITA newswire reported on July 21.
Dubovcová turns to Constitutional Court again
OMBUDSWOMAN Jana Dubovcová has filed another complaint over the laws pertaining to foreigners with the Constitutional Court. According to her, some measures in the law on the residence of foreigners, as well as a law on asylum, violate the Slovak constitution and international conventions.

Hrušovský may lead NKÚ
THE CHRISTIAN Democratic Movement (KDH) will nominate Pavol Hrušovský for the post of the new chair of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ), the SITA newswire reported on July 22. The candidacy of the failed presidential candidate, who recently left his post as the party’s caucus chairman, should be approved in August.
US Embassy expresses sympathy to crash victims
THE US Embassy in Bratislava has sent condolences to families of the victims of the July 17 crash of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 in which 298 people died.
