Supposed Slovak detained in Ukraine may be tied to identity theft
THE ALLEGEDLY Slovak Miroslav Roháč who was detained for participating among pro-Russian militants in eastern Ukraine is not a member of the Slovak army, spokesman of the Slovak Armed Forces (OS) Štefan Zemanovič told the TASR newswire.
Alleged crime boss Yegorov cannot return to Slovakia as he lacks passport
VOLODYMYR Yegorov could not personally attend his August 19 trial at the Trnava District Court. Yegorov, who was extradited from Slovakia to Ukraine in September 2013, lacks a passport, his attorney explained, and his extradition is still valid.
Slovak citizen reportedly detained in eastern Ukraine
A SLOVAK citizen, fighting on the side of the pro-Russian separatists, was detained in eastern Ukraine, the Sme.sk website reported on August 19, citing the public-service Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS).
Three Hockey exhibition matches to commemorate Demitra
SEVERAL ice hockey stars will participate in three exhibition matches in Poprad, Trenčín and Bratislava to commemorate Pavol Demitra, who died in a plane crash near the city of Yaroslavl in central Russia on September 7, 2011. The Slovak team will fight against former players of the St Louis Blues, a team for which Demitra played, the SITA newswire reported on August 18.
€65 million to be spent on fighting poverty
THE LABOUR Ministry has submitted a draft operational programme for food and basic material assistance, aimed at fostering social cohesion and reducing poverty, to interdepartmental review. In the next seven years the ministry plans to allocate €65.1 million for this purpose, the TASR newswire reported on August 18.

Compromise reached in road tax
THE NEW motor vehicle tax will be more ecologically friendly after the Finance Ministry accepted objections to the original proposal from commercial transport firms. The road tax paid by drivers of green vehicles will be lower than originally proposed, and transporters believe the new tax rates will be less discriminatory. The Finance Ministry is currently working on the draft bill of the road tax law, which will unify motor vehicle tax rates in 2015.
Former PM aide gets suspended sentenced for corruption
IN A HIGH-profile corruption trial, the Specialised Criminal Court in Pezinok upheld a one-year suspended prison sentence for a probationary period of two years for former prime ministerial aide Martin Novotný and Slovakia’s ex-ambassador to Kenya for what the court called indirect corruption on August 12. The court has also imposed on the two men a fine of €10,000. The verdict is still not valid, as both of the convicted have appealed.
State-owned Transpetrol spent €704,000 on luxurious sky box
THE MONOPOLY state-owned crude oil carrier Transpetrol owned by the Economy Ministry has been renting a luxurious sky box at the Bratislava stadium for together €704,000 since 2010. The stadium belongs to ice hockey club Slovan HC, owned by Juraj Široký, an alleged sponsor of the ruling Smer party.
