Muňko to lead Sociálna Poisťovňa until July 2016
DUŠAN Muňko, current general director of the social insurer Sociálna Poisťovňa (SP), will keep his post at SP until July 23, 2016, according to the government decision based on the verdict of the Constitutional Court. According to the ruling of the CC, Muňko’s right to hold public office was violated between August 27, 2010 and August 1, 2012, due to the decision of the government of Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (2010-12).
Slovakia to lose further millions in EU-funds
DUE to flaws in drawing European funds, the European Commission will not pay Slovakia some €166 million, according to a document that the cabinet debated. However, the final amount may yet increase, the Sme daily wrote on August 21.
Cabinet approves another weapon amnesty
The Interior Ministry received cabinet approval on August 20 for another amnesty on unregistered weapons that should come into effect from December 2014.

Russian Defence Minister to attend SNP commemoration instead of Putin
RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin will not attend the official celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) in Banská Bystrica. Instead, Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu will come, SNP Museum in Banská Bystrica director Stanislav Mičev confirmed to the SITA newswire on August 20.

WHISTLEBLOWERS should have appropriate legal protection, which should be secured by the law on whistleblowing approved by the government at its August 20 session.
Three to run for Supreme Court president post
THREE people are willing to fight for the Supreme Court president post that has been empty since June after the tenure of Štefan Harabin expired. The already confirmed candidates Daniela Švecová and Daniel Hudák were joined by Supreme Court judge Ivan Rumana. He nominated himself, the SITA newswire reported on August 20.
Unemployment continues to fall
THE REGISTERED unemployment rate stood at 12.67 percent in July, down by 0.12 percentage points compared to June. In annual terms, it dropped by 1.32 percentage points, the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (ÚPSVaR) reported on August 20.
Documentary shows Slovak bond with WWII US pilots
AS THE celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) culminate, several related events and projects are underway. One, a documentary film, details the relationship between US pilots who operated in Slovakia during World War II – and the locals who helped them, especially in the revolt that started on August 29, 1944 and expanded to practically a nation-wide resistance against then-official state fascist regime.

NORMALLY, you don’t see Slovaks travelling the world and blowing themselves up or beheading people. But allegations by Ukraine that a Slovak citizen was caught fighting for the pro-Russian separatists indicate that there are ideologies which inspire violence even in members of our “dove nation”. Sure, it’s hard to draw any serious conclusions from one case, and acts of war and terror are often the result of personal frustration rather than political conviction.
Ukraine reverse flow pipe tested
THE SLOVAK-Ukrainian Vojany-Uzhgorod pipeline, modernised to transport natural gas via reverse flow from Slovakia to Ukraine, began testing in mid-August. Its standard commercial operation is planned to start in September. As market watchers perceive the upgrading of the pipeline as a means to help Ukraine reduce its dependence on Russian gas, they also expect Ukraine to continue transiting Russian gas to Slovakia.
The appeal of the Slovak Sea
Twenty-five years ago when Slovaks had limited options to travel abroad they still had Zemplínska šírava, one of the largest reservoirs in the region – also dubbed the Slovak Sea. While it no longer attracts a million visitors in a single season, the lake, which according to European Environment Agency has excellent water, is getting its second wind offering water-related joys to tourists in an otherwise landlocked country.
Petrovany rejects Spanish investor
COUNCILLORS of Petrovany, a village in the Prešov district, have refused to sell a five-hectare plot of land in a local industrial zone to Funderia Condals, a Spanish company. The firm planned to build a foundry there worth €20 million and create 300 new jobs.
Ombudswoman considers school aptitude tests discriminatory
OMBUDSWOMAN Jana Dubovcová says that current school aptitude tests violate the rights of children. The tests do not take into account the specific abilities of children from socially disadvantaged environments, especially those of the Roma, she told the press on August 20 when presenting the results of the survey carried out between May 14 and June 3.
US Air Force training in Slovakia
TWO UNIQUE CV-22 Osprey aircraft arrived in Slovakia on August 8 to attend the training of the seventh squadron of the US Air Force that will take place until August 21 at the airport in Sliač, Banská Bystrica Region. The US forces will learn how to land in conditions with poor visibility and high dustiness.
Fico proposes stronger Slovak position in Slovenské Elektrárne
THE GOVERNMENT wants to strengthen the state’s position in electricity producer Slovenské Eletrárne (SE). Though Prime Minister Robert Fico says he has a plan for achieving this, he will wait to see whether Italian firm Enel will sell its 66-percent share in the company.
Government supports constitutional ban on water exports
THE GOVERNMENT approved at its August 20 session the draft constitutional amendment that bans the export of water from Slovakia.
JAVYS: Accident in Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear plant not explosion
DURING manipulation with chemicals, there was an accident on August 18 in the former engine hall of the nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice (Trnava Region). A casing was damaged while two employees working there were injured.
Demand for office space in Bratislava nearly tripled in 2Q14
THE AREA covered by modern offices in Bratislava reached 1.5 million square metres in the second quarter of 2014. A full 31 percent of the total was made up of office space in the city centre, while wider central areas accounted for 45 percent and the peripheries for 24 percent, the TASR newswire learnt from property consultancy CBRE on August 19.
Economy Minister visits Ukraine, gets assurances of continued gas flow
SLOVAK Economy Minister Pavol Pavlis visited Ukraine on August 19 and held talks with his counterpart Yuriy Prodan in Kiev.
