While the Labour Ministry and trade unions say the proposed measures will protect temporary employees, employers and employment agencies say the new rules could do away with temporary employment and eliminate thousands of jobs.

POLICE’s decision to charge journalist Dušan Karolyi with libel for his story about police officer abusing his powers met with wide criticism from OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović, media freedom watchdog International Press Institute (IPI) and several Slovak public figures.
Beskyd Rallye brings out vintage car buffs
THE ANNUAL meeting of historical vehicles, Beskyd Rallye, takes part in the northern region of Slovakia, starting just over the border in the Czech Republic. The cars arrived in Velké Rovné, Slovakia, from where they continued to Kysucké Nové Mesto, Krásno nad Kysucou, Čadca and Turzovka, only to end up again in the Czech part of the Beskydy mountain range, which is shared by both countries and which gave the automotive event its name.
State interested in buying SE stake
APART from the Czech energy firm ČEZ and the Czech Energetický a Průmyslový Holding (EPH), the Slovak government is also considered to be one of the potential buyers of the 66-percent stake in the Slovak major electricity producer Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) from its Italian owner, Enel Group. Slovakia may acquire the stake via an energy holding managing shares in energy firms owned by the state.
Government saloon will turn into gallery
THE LOCAL Art civic association and curator Zuzana Duchová will turn the government saloon at Bratislava’s main railway station into a gallery featuring regular exhibitions, cultural events and discussions, the Sme daily reported in its September 9 issue.
VAT lottery to change
AFTER the reported decrease of participants in the National Receipt Lottery (NBL), the state-run lottery company Tipos is opting for changes that begin in late September, including daily broadcast drawings and an increase in the total number of winners.

Employers slightly optimistic
EMPLOYERS in Slovakia are slightly optimistic about hiring in the last quarter of 2014. A survey conducted by Manpower Slovensko on 751 employers across the country, showed 8 percent of employers expect an increase in employees, while 6 percent anticipate a decrease. As many as 79 percent of the surveyed employers do not expect any changes, with 7 percent of the respondents saying they do not know, the SITA newswire reported.
Changes affect Judicial Council
ONE week ahead of the election of the Supreme Court chairperson by the Judicial Council, parliament dismissed Dušan Čimo as a member of the Judicial Council and replaced him by the head of District Court in Spišská Nová Ves Ján Slovinský on September 11.
Firms lack specialists with technical education
DESPITE Slovakia’s two-digit unemployment rate and 380,000 jobless people, companies are having difficulty filling their vacancies, especially those requiring technical expertise. Employers complain of a shortage of specialists with secondary or university-level educations. Both experts and employers see the growing labour market and a poorly tuned education system as behind the current shortage of workers with a technical education, and are calling for changes.“It happens relatively often that we are searching for applicants to fill the most wanted positions even for several months,” said Katarína Bobotová, director of Grafton Recruitment Slovakia. “Sometimes the process lasts more than one year.”
Space Odyssey lands at theatre festival, philharmonic
THE CHILDREN’S opera called 2’16” and a Half: A Space Odyssey is in fact a spirited game played with the audience. Yes, the title references John Cage’s famous composition 4’33”, and yes, it was inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s cinematic cult-classic. But the piece ventures beyond these and is hardly a traditional opera, not to mention that it is adults, rather than children, who can fully appreciate the references and ironies embedded in the work of contemporary Slovak composer Marek Piaček.
Sophisticated skull surgery in Košice restores man’s functions
A UNIQUE titanium implant produced with 3D printer technology was used by Košice doctors and scientists for the second time to reconstruct a portion of the skull of a patient.
Few are interested in municipal elections
THE RULING Smer party is struggling to nominate a strong candidate in each of the eight regional capital cities, while disunited opposition parties are also struggling with a strategy for the fall municipal elections, political analysts noted as candidate lists are expected to close on September 21.
Firms slash high electricity bills
COMPANIES in Slovakia are criticising the Regulatory Office for Network Industries (ÚRSO) for increasing the charge for operating the national grid, which makes up part of the end electricity price, by more than 10 percent as of August 20. The National Union of Employers (RÚZ), Club 500 and the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SOPK) issued a joint statement on September 9, with AmCham, the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia, voicing its criticism on September 10.
