SPP detects almost 25-percent drop in gas flow from Russia
SLOVAK gas utility Slovenský plynárenský priemysel (SPP) has registered a drop in gas supplies from Russia of almost 25 percent.
Electronic marketplace launched
SINCE September 16, transactions can be made via the so-called electronic marketplace, which will be implemented as early as next week. The Interior Ministry’s advisor for public procurement, Tatiana Behrová, said that in the electronic marketplace system, 457 customers and 444 suppliers are registered, which is enough to start the first transactions.
Daniela Švecová elected Supreme Court president
SUPREME Court Judge Daniela Švecová will succeed Štefan Harabin in one of the most powerful judicial positions in the country: the Supreme Court’s top chair. Švecová was elected by the Judicial Council, a top body overseeing the operation of Slovakia’s judiciary, on September 16 in a closely watched vote after 11 of the 15 voting members cast their ballots for her.
Jana Bajánková elected Judicial Council head
SUPREME Court judge Jana Bajánková was elected the head of the Judicial Council, a top body overseeing the operation of the judiciary in Slovakia, on September 16 after 10 of the 16 voting council members voted for her in a secret ballot, the Sme daily reported on its website. There were no votes against, while six members of the council abstained from voting.
Pilgrimage draws thousands to Šaštín
MORE THAN 50,000 people gathered at the National Pilgrimage on the Feast of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, the patron saint of Slovakia, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows in Šaštín (Trnava Region) on September 15. They were transported by two trains, more than 250 buses, but some also came by foot.
Police cooperation has improved since 9/11 attacks
THE POLICE cooperation in fighting terrorism has increased during the past 13 years. Slovak police officers have, for example, better access to direct contacts to foreign departments that deal with the fight against terrorism, including police and intelligence services.
Judicial Council approves new rules for home offices
THE CONDITIONS for judges’ home offices will change as the Judicial Council members passed new rules at their September 16 session, the TASR newswire reported. They were submitted by deputy chair of the Judicial Council Ján Vanko together with Justice Minister Tomáš Borec.
Fico warns of job losses if Russia retaliates
IF RUSSIA were to respond to the third round of the European Union’s sanctions by banning car imports from Europe, 7,000-10,000 people could lose their jobs in Slovakia, Prime Minister Robert Fico said on political talk show O 5 Minút 12 broadcast by the public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS) on September 14.
Inflation continues to decrease
THE ANNUAL inflation rate continued to drop in August when it fell by 0.2 percent. The core inflation did not change, while the net inflation increased by 0.4 percent, the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) informed on September 12.
Judicial Council elects new Supreme Court president
THE JUDICIAL Council elects the new president of the Supreme Court at its September 16 session, which starts at 14:00. The post has been vacant since June 22 when the tenure of previous Supreme Court president and Judicial Council chair Štefan Harabin expired.
Tax licenses will hit the smallest firms
AN ANALYSIS by FinStat project suggests that small companies, which employ the majority of Slovaks, will pay the highest amounts for the so-called tax licenses.
Hong Kong court sentenced Slovak to four years in prison
SLOVAK businessman Juraj Jariabka involved in money laundering in Hong Kong was sentenced to four years by a local court. Jariabka was proven guilty thanks to Italian journalist Antonio Papaleo, who lives in Slovakia.
Foreign activists damage Košice wall
AT THE END of last week, Roma and non-Roma activists from the Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, plus one from Slovakia, made a hole in the infamous Košice wall at the Luník IX housing estate.
Rejected Constitutional Court candidates sent complaints against Kiska
FIVE candidates whom President Andrej Kiska rejected to appoint for Constitutional Court judges are challenging Kiska’s decision at the aforementioned court, the TA3 private broadcaster reported on September 15. There is no reason to change Kiska’s decision, the President’s Office responded.
Fico says he would never agree to NATO base in Slovakia
“EVEN at the cost of politic retirement, I would never agree with a NATO military base in the territory of the Slovak Republic,” said Prime Minister Robert Fico in the interview with the Nový čas tabloid daily on September 13.

Job satisfaction over stress-free life
