Slovak style premiers at Fashion Week in New York
SLOVAK fashion designers Blažena Ostrovská and Jitka Klett presented their work at the ninth year of Slovak Fashion Night that took place for the first time during New York Fashion Week. The event, held in The Attic Rooftop in Manhattan and promotes Slovak fashion each year, attracted Slovak and US guests, as well as fashion experts and the media, the SITA newswire reported on September 7.
Anti-Semitic remarks cast shadow over Holocaust Memorial Day
IN 1941, a set of anti-Jewish laws went into effect in the Nazi wartime satellite Slovak Republic on September 9. Every year on this day, Slovakia commemorates its Holocaust victims. While last year the Catholic Church made its first-ever appearance at the memorial events, in a gesture welcomed by the Jewish community, this year day’s events were somewhat overshadowed by anti-Semitic statements made recently by a higher-ranking Catholic priest.
Man who stole car with woman and child inside charged
BRATISLAVA police, in cooperation with their southern-Slovak counterparts, handled a curious case in mid August: an inhabitant of the capital stole a car that was idling in front of a shopping mall in Bratislava’s Dolné Hony borough. However, a woman and a small boy were both inside the car.

YOUNG motorbike rider Tomáš Paulíček set the first Slovak record for the distance at which he rode a motorbike on its front wheel.
Value judgement
THIS YEAR Slovakia marked the 75th anniversary of the darkest period in the country’s history – the founding of the wartime Slovak state, an entity which, among other crimes it committed on its own citizens, paid Nazi Germany to deport Slovak Jews to concentration camps. Much has been said and written about March 14, the day when the Nazi-puppet state emerged back in 1939, about learning the lessons of history so that they are not repeated and so forth – but apparently not enough.
VW opens new courses
VOLKSWAGEN Slovakia is extending its own training facility, the Centre of Dual Education, in Devínska Nová Ves near Bratislava. In the new school year, it has opened two new two-year courses. Thus, along with students attending the two-year mechatronics course, 12 students are starting a course for industrial mechanics and 12 students are enrolling in the course for electro-technicians for automation technologies.
Media reports lack Roma opinions
MOST stories published about the Roma minority are related to criminality or extremism and lack any views expressed by the Roma, according to a survey conducted by Newton Media, a media monitoring agency. Positive reports about the Roma in the media made up just 10 percent of all news.

SLOVAKIA’s Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák cannot imagine that Slovakia would limit or lower the supplies of the reverse gas flow to Ukraine, the TASR newswire reported on September 11.
New Judicial Council member named
JUDGE Dušan Čimo, who was recalled by the parliament from his Judicial Council post earlier this week, was promptly replaced by Judge Ján Slovinský from the Spišská Nová Ves district court.

THE PARLIAMENTARY opposition will lend support to the bid made by Christian Democrats (KDH) seeking the abrogation of Vladimír Mečiar's amnesties, the TASR newswire reported on September 11.
Western Slovakia faces flood threats
TORRENTIAL rains that occurred in some parts of the country on September 12 left several villages in the Záhorie region in western Slovakia flooded. In the village of Píla, the Gidra stream reached a third degree of flood alert, the Sme daily wrote.
Industrial production up in July
THE INDUSTRIAL production index rose 4.4 percent year-on-year in July. It was affected mostly by the 7.7-percent increase in mining and quarrying, 4.5-percent increase in manufacturing, and 2.4-percent increase in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply, the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) informed on September 11.
Gas supplies to Slovakia drop 10 percent
There was a 10 percent drop in natural gas supplied to Slovakia from Russia on September 10 and 11, Slovenský Plynárenský Priemysel (SPP) gas utility informed.
President wants to discuss parliamentary crisis
PRESIDENT Andrej Kiska wants to meet the representatives of all parliamentary parties to discuss the current situation in parliament. The relations between the ruling Smer and the opposition worsened on September 9 after Smer scrapped 10 opposition bills from parliament’s agenda, the SITA newswire wrote.
First-ever Slovak terrorist sentenced to 25 years in prison
THE KOŠICE Regional Court dismissed the appeal of Ladislav K., the first Slovak charged with terrorism, illegal arming and other crimes, on September 10, and thus confirmed the verdict of the lower-instance court sending the man to prison for 25 years.
Government: Slovakia now better able to cope with gas cut than in 2009
Slovakia is now better prepared for a potential shutdown of gas supplies from Russia across Ukraine than it was in 2009, the Economy Ministry wrote in a report approved by the government September 10.
Police investigate Holocaust references by Catholic priest
THE ŽILINA police launched investigation into whether the sermon by Catholic priest Emil Floriš in Čadca meets conditions of committing an extremism-related crime. The priest said that Jews caused their own fate in the Holocaust and Roma could follow them. The police said they act even without somebody submitting a criminal complaint, the SITA newswire reported on September 10.
