Budget proposal reached deficit at the level of 1.98 percent of GDP
THE SLOVAK government will send to the European Union a budget that counts on a marked improvement of the management of public administration. The public budget’s deficit should be under two percent of GDP and continuously decrease to 1.43 percent of GDP in 2016 and 0.39 GDP in 2017, according to budget draft proposed by Finance Ministry on October 13. The Cabinet should discuss it on October 16.
The annual inflation rate decreased by 0.1 percent in September
THE ANNUAL inflation rate decreased by 0.1 percent in September; core inflation has not changed while net inflation increased by 0.4 percent, the Statistics Office informed on October 13.
50,000 long-term unemployed have never worked
LABOUR offices in Slovakia register almost 108,000 unemployed who have only basic education or not even that, the TASR newswire reported on October 11.
Ground Pepper 2014 military exercise launched
MILITARY exercises with codename Ground Pepper 2014 involving 1,300 soldiers from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and USA as well as 300 pieces of equipment have started on October 13, according to the TASR newswire.
EU-Russia sanctions have caused Agriculture sector shortfalls of €6.2m
THE DIRECT negative effects of the EU-Russia sanctions on Slovakia’s agricultural sector have now reached €6.2 million, according to an Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry’s report based on the statistics of Slovakia-Russia trade in 2013 when Slovak export from the agriculture sector reached €31 million. The report should be on the Cabinet’s agenda at its next regular meeting on October 15.
Košice zoo is the first in Slovakia to breed baby crocodiles
A UNIQUE enhancement of animals bred in the Košice zoo is, since the beginning of September, the hatching of three dwarf crocodiles (Osteolaemus tetraspis, also known as African dwarf).

Harabin runs for Judicial Council seat
ŠTEFAN Harabin, who earlier this year failed in his bid to get re-elected as Supreme Court president, is not ready to part from his influence over Slovakia’s judiciary and will run for a file-and-rank membership in the Judicial Council, which oversees the operation of the judiciary in the country. Harabin was proposed for the post in the council which he personally ran for five years by 10 judges of the penal collegium of the Supreme Court that he currently leads.
Stone-masons’ plain air revives the glory of Oravský Biely Potok
BY THE END of September, the centre of Oravský Biely Potok, a municipality in the northern region of Orava, already saw the 9th year of the special event, Back to the Biely Potok Stone / Návraty k belopotockému kameňu. Seven Slovak and three Polish stone-mason artists transformed sandstone blocks into sacral statues and reliefs. This unique event strives to revive the famous local stone-mason tradition.
Education Ministry sent old textbooks to Slovaks in the US
Slovaks living in the United States will soon receive 499 textbooks from their country of origin. This concerns Slovak language, literature and homeland studies textbooks that have been weeded out in Slovakia as outdated compared to the latest curricula. They would have been discarded if they had not been sent to the US; Education, Science, Research and Sport Ministry spokesperson Beata Dupalová Ksenzsighová informed the TASR newswire.
Strasbourg rejects proposed judges
NONE of the candidates proposed by Slovakia satisfy the requirements for a judge of the European Court of Human Rights, the Council of Europe (CoE) has concluded.
Electricity consumption stagnates
THE ECONOMY Ministry does not have very good news for electricity producers or distributors in Slovakia, as it prognosticates stagnation in electricity consumption this year as well.
A lynx set free to live in wild dies
A YOUNG lynx, only one year old, underwent rehabilitation in the Bojnice zoo. He had lived in the wild previously and was to be released after the treatment ended. The lynx was found injured when very young, and was cured in the zoo.
Organised groups tamper with energy meters
THOUSANDS of people tamper with their electricity and gas meters in order to save money spent on energy, causing suppliers damages reaching millions of euros each year, energy companies say. Such scams increasingly show signs of being orchestrated by professional gangs.
SEPS works on new RES study
THE SLOVAK Electricity Transmission System (SEPS) is working on a new study about renewable energy sources (RES). Apart from others, the study should give an answer to the questions on the future of construction of new wind and large solar power stations in the country. In Slovakia, SEPS operating the national electricity grid is one of the authorities whose approval is needed when building and phasing in new electricity production facilities. The study should be complete by the end of the year, the SITA newswire reported.
Mochovce budget may rise again
THE THIRD block of the nuclear power station of Slovenské Elektrárne in Mochovce is about 80 percent complete and will be put into commercial operation in the third quarter of 2016 and the fourth a year after that, according to Slovenské Elektrárne (SE).
