Ebola facility also in Slovakia
IF A Slovak citizen were diagnosed with the Ebola virus, he or she would be hospitalised at the Clinic of Infectology and Geographical Medicine in Bratislava, a specialised department dealing with infectious diseases including imported contagions, the Slovak Public Health Authority (ÚZV) informed the SITA newswire. An epidemic of this contagious disease has broken out in western Africa and experts have expressed concerns of further spreading.
GP drops charge against journalist
GENERAL Prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár threw out the police’s charge against journalist Dušan Karolyi with libel for his story about a police officer abusing his powers after he went through documents related to the case, the SITA newswire reported on October 1.

Kiska returns from lengthy US trip
PRESIDENT Andrej Kiska concluded a lengthy trip to the United States on October 2, a trip that included the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, and later a trip to California’s Silicon Valley.
Bratislava Kunsthalle opened
FINALLY, after the removal of lengthy political and logistic obstacles, the Slovak capital has its own Kunsthalle, the house of art that has no collections and exhibits of its own, but rather exhibits temporary shows of modern art curated so as to evoke questions and open dialogue.
Slovakia nears record suicide rate
LAST year the number of committed and attempted suicides climbed to 1,600 cases, by which Slovakia neared a 10-year record. Based on data of the National Health Information Centre (NCZI), 628 people committed suicide in Slovakia in 2013, an increase by 10 percent over the previous year, the TASR newswire reported on September 10.
Marking 10 years of health reform
TO DEFINE what medical treatment a patient can demand free of charge based on the compulsory health insurance system is one of the most important measures which should be adopted within Slovakia’s health-care sector. Participants of a workshop held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the so-called Zajac health reform agreed upon this, the SITA newswire reported on September 25. Ten years after adopting the basic six laws reforming health care in Slovakia such a list does not exist.
Festival – what for?
INTERNATIONAL theatre festival Divadelná Nitra presents annually a selection of the most recent plays and projects that have made it to Slovak and foreign stages, with a different motto, or leitmotif, each year. This year, the official slogan was Art – What For? which was also the focus of a public debate that took place during the festival and that is slated to continue even after the festival ends.
Advisor sought
THE HEALTH Ministry is searching for an advisor to help with the public–private partnership (PPP) project to build a brand new university hospital in Bratislava that is to cost €250 million. The advisor is to secure broad financial, legal and technical consulting services in the next three years and advise the public procurement process to select an investor and an operator for the medical facility. The ministry announced the tender on September 26, with the order valued at €2.25 million without VAT. The deadline for submitting bids is November 4, the SITA newswire wrote.
Dance visits the capital
CONTEMPORARY dance is somewhat outside the mainstream of public interest in Slovakia, probably not receiving as much popularity as some other art genres. All the more stunning are festivals which take place around Slovakia – and in the capital. This year, the Bratislava v pohybe / Bratislava in Movement festival will be entering its 18th year.

MORE than one half of Slovaks agree with allowing a seriously ill person to ask for his or her life to be ended with the assistance of a doctor. This is the result of a public opinion poll that the Focus agency conducted for the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) political party, the SITA newswire reported in early September.

Synagogue in Banská Štiavnica has been reconstructed and receives memorial plaques
THE BUILDING of a neolog synagogue in Banská Štiavnica that was dilapidating for decades has been reconstructed and now serves a new function. The religious site, which was used for a tinsmith workshop, driving school and a store for placards and posters for communist celebrations during the past regime was abandoned and left to fall apart between 1989 and 2009, will now become the residence of a brewery, housing the management and part of its secondary activities.
Reformatory facilities are not prisons
THE ENTIRE system of youth correctional facilities does not respect children’s interests and should be reconsidered, according to Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcová pointing to outcomes of her report, based on visits to all six re-education facilities in Slovakia.
