Slovakia commemorates Battle of the Dukla Pass

SLOVAKIA’S top officials attended a commemorative event marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Dukla Pass between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, one of the bloodiest events of World War II, on October 6. President Andrej Kiska and Prime Minister Robert Fico at the ceremony in Vyšný Komárnik (Prešov Region) also drew attention to many casualties from among Slovaks and Czechs who are buried at a nearby cemetery. In total the battle had cost the lives of at least 70,000 soldiers, mainly Germans and Soviets.

Bad health-care providers fined

THE HEALTH Care Surveillance Authority (ÚDZS) imposed 127 fines totalling €188,200 on health-care providers in 2013 for mistakes made when providing health care. The Faculty’s Hospital with Polyclinic in Skalica received the highest fine of €9,950, which is close to the maximum fine that the ÚDZS can impose. Apart from issuing fines, the office can also ban facilities from performing medicine for up to one year, the SITA newswire reported on September 23.
