IPI: Karolyi case shows the need to reform laws
The case of journalist Dušan Karolyi should be a “reminder of pressing need to reform Slovak laws concerning libel in compliance with international standards of the freedom of speech”, the International Press Institute (IPI) opines, as quoted by the SITA newswire.

Slovakia drops in economic freedom index
THE ECONOMIC freedom in Slovakia dropped compared to last year. According to the latest Economic Freedom of the World 2014 report, it placed 45th, nine positions down from 2013 ranking. The country received 7.34 out of 10 points, the SITA newswire reported on October 7.
Enel insistent on selling SE
ITALIAN company Enel insists on selling its 66-percent stock in Slovenské Elektrárne (SE), country’s main electricity producer. The company does not want to say whether it received any concrete offers from potential investors. Enel however informed it would like to complete the sale by the end of this year, the SITA newswire reported on October 6.
Slovakia commemorates Battle of the Dukla Pass
SLOVAKIA’S top officials attended a commemorative event marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Dukla Pass between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, one of the bloodiest events of World War II, on October 6. President Andrej Kiska and Prime Minister Robert Fico at the ceremony in Vyšný Komárnik (Prešov Region) also drew attention to many casualties from among Slovaks and Czechs who are buried at a nearby cemetery. In total the battle had cost the lives of at least 70,000 soldiers, mainly Germans and Soviets.
RegioJet has no place to sell tickets in Košice railway station
IN SPITE of the fact that the Košice railway station is large enough, the private Czech rail carrier RegioJet has no place to sell tickets for the trains it will start sending between Prague and Košice this weekend, and since December also between Prague and Bratislava, the Sme daily reported on October 7.

PROSECUTOR-General’s criminal department secretary Peter Šufliarsky found no legal reasons for taking action regarding the election of the Supreme Court chair held in September, the TASR newswire reported on October 6.

CRIME against children is statistically increasing with nutrition malpractice as one of the most frequent crimes, according to report on activities of the prosecutor’s office in 2013 submitted to the parliament, the Pravda daily reported on October 7.

OMBUDSWOMAN Jana Dubovcová and her staffers visited the busiest branch of the Alien Police, the one in the Petržalka borough of Bratislava on October 6. The office drew media attention in late September since it had problems dealing with ab increased number of foreigners, the Sme daily reported.

THE JUDICIAL Council must repeat the election of Slovakia’s candidates for the post of judge of the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) for the third time, the Sme daily reported on October 6.
SDKÚ has lost the majority of its youth organisation
SDKÚ party’s youth organisation Nová Generácia (New Generation/NG) voted to leave the party at NG’s congress in the eastern Slovak village of Viničky on October 5, the TASR newswire reported on same day.
Pavlis: Slovakia entitled to be first to seek compensation for gas cuts
SLOVAKIA has the right to be the first country to receive potential compensation for a cut in Russian gas supplies, because it complied with all of its European Union obligations, Economy Minister Peter Pavlis said on public service RTVS’s show “O päť minút dvanásť” (Five Minutes to Twelve) on October 5.
Slovak bus had an accident in Serbia
EIGHT people sustained injuries due to a collision between a Slovak tourist bus and a lorry near the Serbian town of Vrčin shortly after 7:00 on October 5. All of the injured people were released from hospital later that day.
Patients seek second opinions online
THE POSSIBILITY to get a second opinion on a health condition online is drawing an increased number of Slovaks. In 2014, two websites providing online diagnoses emerged in Slovakia: Diagnose.me offering services of recognised professionals living all around world and Klik-Klinik which uses domestic doctors.
More money does not mean better care
WHILE health spending in Slovakia lags behind the OECD average, the biggest problem in the country’s health care is not a lack of money – but lack of efficiency.

Free language courses for foreigners outside the EU
FOREIGNERS coming from countries outside the European Union can visit free Slovak language courses held in Bratislava and Košice. The classes for beginners and advanced learners are organised by the Migration Information Centre (MIC) that is part of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Slovakia.
Hviezdoslavovo Square danced for world peace
THE INTERNATIONAL Day of Peace was celebrated around the world on September 21; and in Slovakia the whole Hviezdoslavovo Square in Bratislava welcomed it with a mass dance at the Better World for Everyone (Lepší svet pre všetkých) rally.
Bad health-care providers fined
THE HEALTH Care Surveillance Authority (ÚDZS) imposed 127 fines totalling €188,200 on health-care providers in 2013 for mistakes made when providing health care. The Faculty’s Hospital with Polyclinic in Skalica received the highest fine of €9,950, which is close to the maximum fine that the ÚDZS can impose. Apart from issuing fines, the office can also ban facilities from performing medicine for up to one year, the SITA newswire reported on September 23.
