Festival of homeless people took place in Bratislava
THE EIGHTH year of the international festival of homeless theatres in Europe, ERROR 2014, took place in Bratislava on November 28-29. During two days theatres from Germany, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia showed their performances to visitors arriving to the Pisztory Palace on Štefánikova Street.

Slovaks propose alternative gas route
THE SLOVAK natural gas carrier Eustream has introduced a project for a new gas route from western Europe via Slovakia and Ukraine to the Balkans. The project, called Eastring, would be an alternative to the Russian project South Stream and it would reduce the almost complete dependence of some Balkan countries on Russian gas supplies. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on December 1 that the Kremlin is scrapping its South Stream project.
Only two candidates for ECHR post
SLOVAKIA will not send three names for a vacant post at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) by January 5 as was required, with the Judicial Council failing to elect all three candidates.
Bratislava’s Kunsthalle gets new head
THE SLOVAK Centre of Visual Arts (SCVU), which houses the Kunsthalle in Bratislava, has a new director. The seven-member committee picked art historian Juraj Čarný, the TASR newswire reported.
Journalist charged with libel
A FORMER journalist of the Nový Čas tabloid daily – now a freelance journalist – Júlia Mikolášiková using the pseudonym Piraňa [Piranha] has been charged by the Bratislava police with libel, and now faces two to five years in prison depending on the type of libel.
A lot still needs to be done
MORE THAN 25 years ago, there were working Saturdays and voluntary involuntary brigades, all under close scrutiny by the only correct political party. The fall of the communist regime in 1989 ended all of this, making space for the arrival of corporate social responsibility. But even though a lot has been done and the mind-set of people as well as companies has been changing, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
Christmas markets opened
THE SLOVAK capital may not be the place you would immediately associate with widely-known Christmas markets, but it is probably the place with the biggest density of these markets per square meter: in its wider centre, at least four separate markets have expanded their kiosks, nativity scenes and choirs singing carols.

Opposition alleges embezzlement at state forestry firm
THE RESULT of public procurement announced by the state-run forestry company Lesy SR went to a more expensive company with ties to the ruling Smer party, according to Zsolt Simon who served as agriculture minister in past.
Academic Martin Klus joins SaS
MARTIN Klus, a political analyst and vice-rector of Banská Bystrica’s Matej Bel University, has decided to join the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, becoming the second public personality, after LGBTI activist Romana Schlesinger, to join the party in recent months, TASR reported on December 4. “We’re a stable party with the best programme – a party of experts,” SaS Chairman and MEP Richard Sulík said at a press conference, as quoted by TASR. “From this point of view, our newest acquisition is extremely valuable and in line with who we are.”
Niki introduces flights from Bratislava to Brussels and Mallorca
AUSTRIAN airline Niki, a subsidiary of Air Berlin, will introduce connections from Bratislava to Brussels and Mallorca as of April 2015, the M.R. Štefánik Airport General Director Ivan Trhlík and Niki General Director Christian Lesjak announced at a joint press conference on December 4, the TASR newswire reported.
KDH collecting signatures for no-confidence motion against Počiatek
THE CHRISTIAN Democratic Movement (KDH) announced on December 4 that they have begun collecting signatures in parliament to initiate a no-confidence motion in Transport, Construction and Regional Development Minister Ján Počiatek for what they call a shady tender organised by the National Highway Company (NDS).
Gabčíkovo rental deal terminated
SLOVAKIA has terminated the contract on the rental of the hydropower station Gabčíkovo to the dominant power producer Slovenské Elektrárne (SE), accusing SE of violation of the contract. SE denies the accusations and indicates that it may take legal steps. “After eight years of operating the Gabčíkovo hydropower plant by the Italian company Enel, we have decided, based on flagrant violations of the contract on operation of the Gabčíkovo hydropower plant, to terminate the contract as of today,” Prime Minister Robert Fico said at a press conference on December 4.
Government terminates contract with SE on Gabčíkovo water plant
Slovak government will end the contract concerning the operating of water power plant Gabčíkovo (VEG) with the Slovenské elektrárne (SE) energy company, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced December 4.
Defence Minister wants new air defence radar
Defence Minister Martin Glváč will report to the cabinet about the situation with current military radar, whose service life is ending and because of EU sanctions against Russia it is not possible to procure replacement parts from Russian manufacturer Almaz Antey.
Parliament approves budget for next year, deficit to fall
At its December 4 session, MPs the approved the 2015 budget with the deficit of public expected to f all to 2.29 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).
Constitutional Court cancels rules in favour of Čentéš
IN the complex case of duly elected but never appointed to the post general prosecutor Jozef Čentéš, the panel of Constitutional Court on December 4 cancelled the decision of former president Ivan Gašparovič not to appoint him.
Salmanovs convicted of corruption
THE SPECIALISED Criminal Court in Pezinok found businessmen of Russian origin Sergei and Alexander Salmanov guilty of corruption and sentenced them to seven and six years, respectively, in minimum-security prison. It did not accept the proposal of prosecutor to fine them €50,000, the SITA newswire reported.
