Unemployment down in 3Q
THE UNEMPLOYMENT in Slovakia fell by 8.2 percent year-on-year to 350,600 in the third quarter of the year. The jobless rate dropped by 1.2 percentage points y/y to 12.9 percent. The unemployment rate for men went down by 1.4 percentage points y/y to 12.3 percent, while the unemployment rate of women dropped by 0.9 percentage points y/y to 13.6 percent.
Business environment index drops
SLOVAKIA’S business environment index recorded a drop of 2.58 percent quarter-on-quarter to 62.2 points in third quarter of the year, the Business Alliance of Slovakia (PAS) informed on December 3, citing results of its own survey.
MPs approve changes to public procurement law
ONLY companies which will reveal their ownership structure will be able to take part in public competitions. This stems from the amendment to the law on public procurement approved by 85 MPs on December 3. The bill was passed in a fast-tracked procedure, the TASR newswire wrote.
Gašparovič violated Čentéš’s rights when he refused to appoint him
FORMER president Ivan Gašparovič violated Jozef Čentéš’s basic rights when he was lawfully elected by the parliament to the post of prosecutor general, but Gašparovič refused to appoint him, the Constitutional Court ruled on December 4. The court has also cancelled the late 2012 decision of Gašparovič.
Temporary employees will have better conditions as of next year
PEOPLE hired via temporary employment agencies will work under the same conditions as their colleagues hired directly by the given company as of the beginning of next year. This stems from the amendment to the Labour Code passed by the parliament on December 2, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia improves in the corruption index
SLOVAKIA improved its position in the Corruption Perception Index by Transparency International compared to last year. It placed 54th of 175 surveyed countries, up by six places. The placement takes into consideration slightly lower number of surveyed countries compared to 2013, the Transparency International Slovensko (TIS) informed in a press release.

INDEPENDENT MP Martin Fedor joins the non-parliamentary Sieť party, he told the media on December 3.
Slovakia’s economy continues growing
SLOVAKIA’S economic growth also continued in the third quarter of this year. It stood at 2.4 percent of GDP, which is 0.9 percentage points more than last year, confirming the flash estimate from November. Compared to the previous quarter, the volume of the GDP, after seasonal adjustment, rose by 0.6 percent.

Finance Minister Peter Kažimír presented the state budget proposal in parliament on December 2, thus officially launching a debate.
MP Hlina: Construction of parliamentary garages at castle needs scrutiny
Bratislava Castle is being reconstructed, and part of the design is also building underground parking lots for MPs. However, during the construction work ancient Roman artefacts were excavated, and the current plans was to just bury them under the soil and leave them in the state they are.
Sieť’s Procházka accused of tax evasion, is ready to cooperate
Chairman of the Sieť party Radoslav Procházka was charged by General Prosecutor’s Office with attempted tax evasion, the Aktuálne.sk website informed on December 2. GPO spokeswoman Andrea Predajňová confirmed this for the website.
Fico says government may step down in June 2015
The incumbent government might conclude its tenure before its mandate is up, Prime Minister Robert Fico indicated at a debate sponsored by the daily Hospodárske Noviny (HNClub discussion forum) on December 2.
R2 construction around Detva is on time, Zvolen stretch delayed
ABOUT 40 percent of the R2 express double-carriage way between Kriváň and Pstruša (Banská Bystrica Region) is still under construction, which is in accordance with the planned timetable. On the other hand, the R2 section between Pstruša and Zvolen slightly lags behind plans that envisioned its completion in September 2016, the TASR newswire reported.
Fico warns against large military conflict in Ukraine
UKRAINE may be threatened by a big military conflict. The probability that it will erupt currently stands at 70 percent, Prime Minister Robert Fico said at HN Club, a discussion forum organised by the Hospodárske Noviny daily.
Former Polish president receives honorary doctorate
FORMER Polish president Aleksander Kwasniewski received the honorary Doctor Honoris Causa degree from the University of Ss Cyril and Methodius in Trnava on December 1 in recognition of his contribution to the development of Slovak-Polish relations, active aid during Slovakia’s EU and NATO accession phase and for developing cooperation in the central European region.
State-run railways will decrease ticket prices
STATE-RUN Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) passenger carrier will decrease the price of tickets for its IC trains running between Bratislava and Košice. The prices will start at €12 for a one-way ticket, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported in its December 1 issue.
The Judicial Council elects only two candidates for ECHR post
SLOVAKIA will not send the list with three names for the judicial post at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) by January 5 as it was required, as the Judicial Council failed to elect all three candidates. Only two have already received the necessary support: Košice-based judge Ladislav Duditš and Zuzana Dlugošová, who worked at the ECHR between 2009 and 2013 as a lawyer and now serves as an advisor to the US Embassy to Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported.
Another journalist is prosecuted; she quoted a testimony
FORMER journalist of the Nový Čas tabloid daily – now a freelance journalist – Júlia Mikolášiková has been charged by the Bratislava police with the crime of libel, and now faces two to five years of prison depending on the type of libel the Sme daily reported on December 2.
Ex-SaS/NOVA Miškov unveils new party, SKOK
THE SLOVAK Civic Coalition, a new political party known as SKOK for short, is aiming to push for the principles of a free, fair and open society, said Independent MP and former economy minister Juraj Miškov when officially announcing the founding of the party in Bratislava on December 1, the TASR newswire reported.
Strategy for human rights drafted
THE STATEWIDE Strategy for the Protection and Support of Human Rights has been approved by the Government Council for Human Rights, Ethnic Minorities and Gender Equality, with the document slated to be discussed by the government, the TASR newswire learnt on December 1.
