Dubai and Bratislava connected
DUBAI-based airline flydubai has added Bratislava to the growing network within its significant expansion in central and southeast Europe. Firstly, it will run two return flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays and it will add a flight connection on Wednesdays as of January 14. During the promotion for the new regular flight, the airlines announced they will consider further extension based on the number of passengers, the SITA newswire reported.
Corporate loans on the rise
AFTER a two-year decline, banks in Slovakia are reporting an increased demand for corporate loans. While low business confidence accounted for much of the lull, analysts cite a return to investing in growth as the engine of the more recent revival.
Slovaks are conservative and thrifty savers

Drama section of SND will offer subtitles for foreigners
THE DRAMA section of the Slovak National Theatre (SND) will offer some of its performances with English subtitles as of January 2015, within the project Bring Your Foreigner. This will allow foreigners who either live in or visit Slovakia to see not only opera and ballet, but also drama performances “without any language barrier”, the TASR newswire reported on December 8.
Čižnár to stay on as prosecutor
THE LANDMARK ruling of the Constitutional Court from December 4 on the case of lawfully elected but never appointed general prosecutor Jozef Čentéš is unlikely to induce any changes to one of the most powerful judicial positions in the country.
CC approves vaccination
THE CONSTITUTIONAL Court decided that laws concerning the mandatory vaccination of children do not contradict the Constitution and parents can be fined for avoiding them, the TASR newswire wrote on December 10.
Encouraging Roma study
SLOVAKIA needs more Roma with a university-level education, say participants in the “Even you have a chance” programme, which provides free courses, scholarships or extra lessons at the University of Economics in Bratislava (EUBA) for Roma wanting to study there.
New guidelines in place for lenders
MORTGAGES should not go to just anybody who asks for one, the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) has warned in reaction to a significant increase in the number of loans given out. Growth is not always a good indicator, as the central bank sees a risk that increased competition on the lending market has led to an easing of credit standards – leading to a new set of recommendations to lenders.
More trains on rails
AS PROMISED, the state passenger railway company Železničná Spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) is launching new train lines as of mid-December. Behind the new lines is increased interest in passenger railway transport boosted by the extension of groups of citizens eligible for free rail transport, as well as efforts to continue to build a so-called clock-face schedule in Slovakia.

“IT’S a very complicated issue,” Health Minister Viliam Čislák responded to a journalist’s question about whether it is possible to be competent while still violating the law. The journalists were grilling Čislák over Smer nominees signing overpriced catering contracts on behalf of state-owned hospitals with a pair of suspiciously intertwined companies.
More floods mean more insurance

EC rejects Dôvera’s motion
THE EUROPEAN Commission has rejected a motion by the private health insurer Dôvera which asked it to examine alleged state assistance to state-run health insurers into which previous governments poured €153.4 million in total, the Trend weekly wrote on its website on December 8. According to Andrej Králik of the Representation of the European Commission (EC) in Slovakia, provision of the assistance was not at odds with the European Union rules regarding state aid.

IN RECENT years, banks and mobile operators have brought lots of new technologies and improvements for contactless mobile payments. Although these kinds of payments still account for just a small portion of all payments, more options and increased usage are expected in the coming year.

THE CONSTRUCTION of the Railway Track of Youth, so symbolic for its time, was finalised on October 28, 1949, and two days later, it was ceremonially put into operation.
Shady CT scanner contract already terminated, caterering deals still active
The Medical Group company, the company at the centre of an overpriced CT scanner worth almost €1.6 million that it was supposed to deliver to the Piešťany hospital has agreed to terminate the contract. Neither side will exercise the contractual sanctions, the Sme daily wrote in its December 12 edition. However, contracts that secured millions of euros to two companies for delivering food and catering services to four Slovak hospitals may yet spark a legal battle.
