Niki postponed its expansion into Bratislava

AIR carrier Niki, a subsidiary of Air Berlin, has postponed its expansion into Bratislava. Direct flights on the line Bratislava-Brussels, will become reality as late as October 5, 2015 due to the market situation, the Hospodárske noviny daily reported on January 26, citing the Austrian APA newswire.

Passenger numbers at Košice airport soared

THE AIRPORT in Košice handled 356,750 passengers in 2014, representing an annual increase in passenger numbers of 50 percent, the TASR newswire reported on January 19.

Ryanair will launch flights from Bratislava to Athens

IRISH low-cost airlines Ryanair will launch flights from Bratislava to Athens in its summer operation as of 2015. It will fly to the Greek capital three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, the SITA newswire reported on December 16.

Dubai and Bratislava connected

DUBAI-based airline flydubai has added Bratislava to the growing network within its significant expansion in central and southeast Europe. Firstly, it will run two return flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays and it will add a flight connection on Wednesdays as of January 14. During the promotion for the new regular flight, the airlines announced they will consider further extension based on the number of passengers, the SITA newswire reported.

New flight to Dubai to be launched

FLYDUBAI airlines will launch the third regular flight from Bratislava to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Except for two return flights that take place on Tuesday and Saturday it will also operate a flight connection on Wednesdays as of January 14, 2015. The reason for increasing the number of flights is the increased interest in the destination, the SITA newswire reported.

Difficulties in air travel connection

EVEN though Poland and Slovakia are divided by mountains, and existing cross-border road infrastructure is far from ideal, there are currently no direct regular flights between the two countries. There have been some attempts to launch such routes, but interest was too low to maintain them. Yet, hopes that direct routes will be made available again in the future have not faded completely, as tourism experts believe that a direct flight would help foster tourism in the High Tatras.

SPPK does not fear Russian ban on food imports

WHILE some farmers say the limitations Russia passed in response to the third round of sanctions issued by the European Union and the US will not significantly affect the Slovak market, others warn that mostly retailers and businesspeople will be affected, the Sme.sk website reported on August 6.

London-Košice flights popular

THE LAUNCH of a regular route between Košice in eastern Slovakia and the London airport Luton was one of the milestones of Košice airport in 2013. The route, which Hungarian low-cost airlines Wizz Air launched in mid-September, has proved popular in both directions. After less than nine months of operation the airport has welcomed 50,000 passengers on this route.

ČSA halves Prague-Bratislava-Košice flights in summer

CZECH airliner České Aerolínie (ČSA Czech Airlines) has reduced the frequency of scheduled flights between Prague and Košice via Bratislava for the summer. Travellers now have four instead of eight return flights per week. The airliner scaled back its summer flight schedule due to lower interest among business clients in flying this route during the summer months, the SITA newswire reported on July 15.

PASSENGER air transport is still trying to find its place even as Slovakia has witnessed the grounding of several operators in recent years. The challenge emanating from low-cost carriers, the concentration of demand for air transport in Bratislava and western Slovakia, offers from nearby foreign airports and the years of economic crisis mean that frequent change has been the reality.Most recently, the Danube Wings airline halted its passenger air transportation.
