The rise was greatly fuelled by regularly scheduled flights, with passenger numbers up by 90,784 (or 64 percent) year-on-year. That said, the airport also saw its most successful season in charter flights following an increase of 31 percent to 124,363 passengers of charter flights in 2014.
The number of aircraft movements, i.e. take-offs and landings, rose by 13 percent y/y in 2014. The sum of the maximum takeoff weight of all aircraft taking off and landing at the airport last year equalled to 104,748 tonnes, which constitutes a rise of 39 percent.
“Thanks to dependable and stable operations of our long-term partners, the Czech Airlines and the Austrian Airlines, high demand for flights to London with Wizz Air (Hungary) and a highly successful summer charter season, we are happy to report a 50-percent rise in the number of passengers handled,” said the airport’s CEO and management board chairman Karl Dandler, as quoted by TASR.
Of 17 seaside destinations that could be reached from the airport using charter flights, Antalya (Turkey), Burgas (Bulgaria) and Monastir (Tunisia) remained at the top from the year prior.
“I’m proud to say that Košice as the most dynamically developing Slovak city has an airport that ranks among the fastest-growing airports in Europe,” Košice Mayor Richard Raši said, as quoted by TASR. “Thanks to connections to three central European metropolises and a number of seaside destinations, people from all over eastern Slovakia have a chance to travel and relax, while tourists, executives and investors have the possibility to discover our beautiful city.”
