The investment worth about €40 million should guarantee complying with the limits of the European Union in the long run and should become effective as of next year, SE spokeswoman Jana Burdová told the TASR newswire.
The ongoing project of modernisation and ecologisation was launched by SE as early as 2012, with several initial phases already finished and the phase of implementation being completed now.
The investment involves two blocks of the plant ENO B, which were modernised and ecologised already in the past, and it represents the optimum technological-economic solution to secure the continuity of tasks crucial to the national economic interest, according to Burdová.
She reminded that in 2011 SE invested in the project of enhancing the fuel basis of the A ENO block and launched co-combustion with local wooden chips.
“Last year, thermal power stations of SE achieved a total saving of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide of 57.407 tonnes stemming from the replacement of fossil fuels with wood chip-biomass in fluidised bed boilers of the power plant,” Burdová explained.
The brown coal power plant Elektárne Nováky lies close to the Novácke uhoľné bane – coal mines in the town of Nováky. Apart from production and supply of electric power, ENO also provides the supply of hot water used for heating in the towns of Prievidza, Nováky, and Zemianske Kostoľany, as well as for other industrial areas and organisations, the SITA newswire wrote.
During the ecologisation of blocks 1 and 2, the less environmentally friendly blocks 3 and 4 are in use. They will be ultimately shut down in the beginning of 2016, after the revamp is completed.
The installed capacity of ENO, combusting exclusively Slovak brown coal, is 440 megawatts on four blocks of ENO B and 46 megawatts on ENO A. The blocks at ENO B were launched into operation in 1964 and 1976, the blocks at ENO A in 1996 and 2003. Two of the ENO B blocks were modernised in 1994 and ecologised in 1999. With installed capacity of 486 megawatts, these blocks represent about 9 percent of the total installed capacity of SE.
