DURING the 2012-2013 flu season, 112 cases of swine flu, or A(H1N1), were recorded in Slovakia, the Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic announced on September 23.
The first case of swine flu in Slovakia was recorded in Trnava last October. Subsequent cases started appearing in January. Eight patients suffering from swine flu died.
The World Health Organisation declared A(H1N1) swine flu a pandemic in June 2009, the first such declaration in over 40 years. That status was officially lifted in August 2010. The pandemic strain of the flu is already considered to be a common seasonal strain circulating in the public.
The number of those who receive flu vaccinations has been decreasing in Slovakia. During the 2012–2013 flu season, 4.6-percent of the population received the vaccination, while one year ago it was 7.5 percent, the private TV Markiza reported, citing data of the Public Health Authority.
