THE ŠARIŠ and Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) beer brands won gold in their respective categories in a competition organized by the Association of Beer and Malt Producers, according to a story in the Pravda daily on August 21.
Šaris, which is produced in Veľký Šariš in East Slovakia's Prešov region, placed first with its dark 11-grad and light 10-grad brews, while Zlatý Bažant came out on top with its 12-grad beer.
The grad marks do not refer to the percentage of alcohol in the beers, but to a different system of measurement. A "10-grad" beer typically contains around 4 percent alcohol, while a "12-grad" brew contains around 5 percent.
The results of the competition were announced at the annual agricultural Agrokomplex Fair, which took place last week in Nitra.
