Skalica’s sugary new weapon

THE TOWN of Skalica will introduce ‘a younger sister’ of the traditional trdelník cake at Bratislava’s biggest tourist fair, being held between January 20 and 23. It is the so-called tall Skalica wedding cake (skalická vysoká torta), which was once ever-present at Skalica weddings, according to Renáta Fasurová from the local municipal office, the SITA newswire reported.

The cake is about 130 centimetres tall and takes about one week to produce. At the fair, cake-making couple Petra and Jozef Hránek will demonstrate the process of decorating the unique edifice. According to Hránková, the cake is more a work of art than a delicacy, but it is edible.

During the first half of the 20th century the tall wedding cake was a staple at weddings in Skalica but the skills used to make it later died out. The Hránek family decided to revive the tradition and have since learned to create the exceptional wedding centerpiece.
