Industrial real estate recovering
THE INDUSTRIAL real estate market in Slovakia is slowly recovering from recent years of economic troubles while market watchers expect that the ‘built-to-suit’ market will lead the way in the coming years and dominate. The automotive industry remains one of the driving forces of the industrial space market, while growing e-commerce is also adding momentum. Another trend sees increased technological demands for industrial premises and a push for energy efficiency.
Efficiency and innovation emphasised
LOGISTICS and transportation firms mimic the development of their customers; thus they grew in Slovakia during the boom years and experienced difficulties during recent years of slow growth. That has brought challenges in the form of pressure for lower prices, improved service, flexibility and innovation.

Truckers call for bigger discounts
MOTOR carriers united in the Slovak Union of Motor Carriers (UNAS) are calling for a change in the draft bill on a road tax proposing more generous discounts for green vehicles, as well as to reduce the tax to the level valid in the Czech Republic. Otherwise, they are afraid that most carriers will leave Slovakia by the end of the year. The draft revision has advanced to the second reading in the Slovak Parliament and legislators are expected to discuss it during the session starting on October 14, the TASR newswire reported.
Rail transport segment faces big changes
TURBULENT times are coming to Slovak passenger rail transport as two private Czech companies, RegioJet and Leo Express, will enter the lucrative long-distance transport between Košice-Bratislava and Prague. The first clashes between RegioJet and state-run passenger carrier Železničná Spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) have already occurred.

Fate of Bratislava airport unclear
THE TRANSPORT Ministry has not yet decided on how Bratislava’s M. R. Štefánik Airport will operate in the future. The ministry is still analysing the pros and cons of a possible long-term lease of Slovakia’s biggest airport to a private operator via a concession, the SITA newswire wrote on April 7.
Toll scheme changes
THE ELECTRONIC toll collection system has undergone an extensive overhaul, with the network of tolled roads expanded and new tariffs that target the environmental friendliness of trucks. However, after truckers threatened to strike and complained that the burden which the new scheme puts on their shoulders is too heavy, the state lightened its grip on the reins, leading to complaints from municipalities about the disruption cargo transport causes to everyday lives.
Bratislava sold stake in SPaP
THE BRATISLAVA municipality is selling its 7-percent stake in the shipping company Slovenská Plavba a Prístavy (Slovak Shipping and Ports - SPaP) to its majority owner, Budamar Transport Limited, for €800,000. Bratislava municipal deputies voted for the sale in late March, the Sme daily reported.Several deputies expected higher proceeds from the transaction, in the range of €1 million to €4.5 million, due to the undistributed €14 million profit that the company has maintained. The Bratislava municipality claims that the selling price is close to two experts’ estimates, which neared €700,000.
Capital integrates public transit system
AFTER a bumpy start, the integrated transportation system of Bratislava Region was finally launched in mid-2013, enabling commuters to travel on one pre-paid ticket via train, bus or any means of Bratislava’s city transport. While the system was first put into operation for routes to the Záhorie region, the serviced area will be extended in the second phase to cover the whole Bratislava Region and selected municipalities of Trnava Region.
Passenger air traffic shrinks
SIX Slovak airports served 1,660,277 passengers in 2013, representing a 3-percent decline, or 51,702 passengers, compared with 2012. Regular transport passengers accounted for 1,024,424 people and their number decreased by 3.6 percent, or 38,375 passengers, over the year. International charter air transport increased by 0.9 percent, or 5,008 people, to 586,760, the SITA newswire wrote on April 7, based on Transport Ministry data.
30,400 cars drive toll roads daily
ON AVERAGE, 30,428 motor vehicles drove toll roads daily in Slovakia in February. Compared with January, this represented a 9.7-percent increase.
E-tolls fetched nearly €160 million
THE ELECTRONIC toll scheme, which targets motor vehicles above 3.5 tonnes on tolled roads in Slovakia, fetched €159 million in total in 2013, up 2.3 percent y/y, the toll company SkyToll reported as cited by the TASR newswire.
Air transport poses challenges
PASSENGER air transport is still trying to find its place even as Slovakia has witnessed the grounding of several operators in recent years. The challenge emanating from low-cost carriers, the concentration of demand for air transport in Bratislava and western Slovakia, offers from nearby foreign airports and the years of economic crisis mean that frequent change has been the reality. Most recently, the Danube Wings airline halted its passenger air transportation. After four years of operation it first closed down its Bratislava-Košice routes in late November 2013, before ceasing all other flights in December.
