Thousand and one nights – Bratislava museums and galleries

The annual event marking International Museum Day takes place on May 20 this year, and in the Slovak capital, the doors of many museums and galleries will stay open until midnight, offering a host of accompanying events, some of which do not require a knowledge of Slovak. A more detailed programme is incldued.

One of the events not requiring Slovak language skills is the performance in the Slovak National Gallery that will be the result of a two-day (May 18 and 19) workshop.

Some venues not usually accessible to visitors will invite them to join in on this special night.

There will also be special transport around Bratislava arranged for that day, making the venues that lie further away more accessible– like the Sihoť waterworks’ garden, the B-S 4 Lány Bunker/fortress of the Czechoslovak Fortification Museum and the B-S Vrba Infantry Log Cabin. Also some new venues have joined the event, like the University Library and the Theatre Museum – in the Theatre Institute.

The biggest state institutions, the Slovak National Museum (coordinator for Bratislava and the Bratislava Region-SNM) with all its venues, the Bratislava City Museum (MMB), the Slovak National Gallery, the Slovak Design Centre, the Transport Museum-branch of the Slovak Technical Museum Košice (STM), as well as smaller museums (Museum of Trade, Museum of Railways, etc. and some other galleries (Umelka, Kunsthalle, private Nedbalka gallery) have been included on the list of participating institutions.

For a mere two euros paid at the first venue, visitors will be able to go to all the places, take part in workshops (the one at the SNG is in English), concerts, historical train rides (in the transport museum) and more. Also, there will be historical vehicles – buses, trams and trolleybuses, as well as a small tourist train Prešporáčik – offered by a local transport company and a private tourist agency shuttling in the city centre, connecting the selected venues.
