“An era of cooperation comes to Bratislava, and I am calling on all the active, engaged people to join us,” said Matúš Vallo in his post-election statement on the morning of November 11.

Vallo, an architect and musician who ran as an independent candidate with the support of the non-parliamentary Progressive Slovakia and Spolu, won the mayoral race in Bratislava, ahead of independent candidate Václav Mika, former director of the public-service broadcaster RTVS. The incumbent mayor, Ivo Nesrovnal (also running as independent), came in third, followed by Vajnory Mayor and candidate of the centre-right opposition parties, Ján Mrva.

“I think I had a fun campaign and I never said anything in it that I do not have background from experts on or something I do not believe in,” Vallo said, adding he believed the transparency of his campaign also resonated among people.

Vallo went into the elections with his Plan Bratislava programme, which he also published as a book and which dozens of experts worked on. After he takes over at the municipal office, Vallo said he will start focusing on transport, but he will apply the expertise of his Team Vallo and work on various areas of life in the city.

Nesrovnal ended third
