The Slovak Post Office has released a stamp for Christmas 2019: Traditional Slovak tinkery. The motif of the stamp is a hanger in the shape of a heart made out of wire. The object belongs to the collection of the Považské Museum in Žilina. Inspired by traditional motifs, it was made by artistic tinker Peter Hlavatovič.

Tinkery is a unique technological and artistic phenomenon, according to the museum, with a specific place in Slovak history.

“They developed special, seemingly primitive, but ingenious and effective ways of work, non-demanding for work conditions, tools and equipment,” said Katarína Hallonová of the museum, as quoted by the SITA newswire.

Depending on the country where Slovak tinkers worked, they produced a wide assortment of goods, from kitchen utilities, through tools for wine-makers, farmers, florists, beekeepers and fishermen, as well as toys and garden furniture.

The wire allowed the usage of many decoration features, hand-making imprinting individuality and charm, Hallonová said.
