New garbage bins to thwart bears

AS PART OF a management plan to reduce problems that stem from the coexistence of bears and people, new garbage receptacles that lock properly have been supplied by the Muránska Planina nature reserve, part of the National Park administration, to the municipalities of Tisovec, Muránska Huta and Pohronská Polhora in central Slovakia.

Danubiana art museum seeks government financial aid

THE DANUBIANA art museum, a renowned modern art gallery situated on a man-made peninsula in the Danube River, might be forced to close due to financial problems, according to its director, Vincent Polakovič. The director of the private gallery told the Sme daily that this might happen as early as January 2012. The museum, near the Gabčíkovo dam and adjacent to the Čunovo whitewater sports complex, is home to permanent and visiting exhibitions.

AN EXPEDITION led by Jaroslav Oršula to Vava’u Island in the South Pacific kingdom of Tonga returned to Slovakia on November 8.

Major TV mini-series to star Košice’s cathedral

THE GOTHIC Cathedral of St Elisabeth in Košice was the backdrop for a major foreign TV production that transformed the cathedral into a landmark of the fictional English medieval town of Kingsbridge for five days at the end of October. The shooting involved a crew of 250, more than a hundred extras, 50 trucks with props, and took a week of preparations.

Ancient ossuary to open in summer

AN OSSUARY at St Nicholas’ Church in Trnava will be opened to residents and visitors this coming summer after completing the first five-month phase of its restoration at the beginning of November.

A PROCESSION carrying Chinese lanterns was held for the first time in Ružomberok on November 11, to mark the Christian holiday of St Martin. The event began at Š.N. Hýroš park and after lighting the lanterns the procession of children and parents walked through the town’s streets and then back to the park where treats and tea were served.

International Women's Club Xmas Bazaar raises €88,000

THE ANNUAL Christmas Bazaar hosted by IWCB, the International Women’s Club of Bratislava held at Stará Tržnica, the old market hall in the Slovak capital on November 20, raised a record sum of €88,000.

Small-leaf lime is Tree of the Year

A 320-YEAR-old small-leaf lime growing in Lipany in eastern Slovakia has been chosen as Slovakia’s Tree of the Year for 2011. Interestingly, the Slovak word for a lime tree, or linden, is “lipa” so the tree comes from its namesake town. The winning tree attracted 1,699 of the 10,167 votes that were cast in the competition.

Archaeologists to research Bronze Age settlement

SLOVAK and German archaeologists have started research at a unique fortified town from the early Bronze Age located in Vráble near Nitra that should continue for several years. The research project will be financed mostly by Germany and its results are viewed as important for all of Europe.

Theatre performance features mentally-handicapped actors

A FORMER theatre in Bratislava has been renamed Staromestský klub (Old Town Club) and the actors performing there are mentally-handicapped residents of the Prima House of Social Services who staged their first performance on October 1 with Stopy snov alebo Komentované obrazy z netradičného dialógu (Dreams’ Traces or Commented Images from Non-traditional Dialogue).

SLOVAKIA’S national civic association for the protection of animals, Sloboda zvierat (Animal Freedom), which also operates animal shelters across the country, celebrated World Animal Day (WAD) at its Bratislava shelter on October 8.

AN INTERACTIVE educational project called Jazz ide do školy (Jazz Goes to School) visited schools in five Slovak cities and towns in October for the fourth consecutive year.

Nitran or Nitrančan

A CURIOUS petition has been launched by activists in Nitra who are seeking an official change in how they are referred to in the Slovak language. The Slovak term for a Nitra resident, as codified by the state, is ‘Nitran’ but the activists want this changed to ‘Nitrančan’. Hardly anyone from Nitra or its adjoining communities uses the official term ‘Nitran’ and young people are rather perplexed when they learn that the official word for them is not ‘Nitrančan’, wrote the TASR newswire.

Slovak athletes to sport Čičmany motif at Olympics

SLOVAKIA has formally agreed to participate in the 30th Summer Olympic Games in London next summer and also decided on a folk-pattern design for the athletes’ attire, according to František Chmelár, the head of the Slovak Olympic Committee, who signed the Olympic application on October 24.
