Bibles big, small... and waterproof

A SPECIAL exhibition offered at the Hornozemplianska knižnica (Upper Zemplín Library) in Vranov nad Topľou called Biblia včera, dnes a zajtra (The Bible Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) features historical Czech bibles as well as versions of the Bible from all over the world, some published as long ago as the 16th century and others with rather more modern formats.

Museum snowed in

MORE THAN one-and-a-half metres of snow fell at the open-air Museum of Kysuce Village in Vychylovka in February and museum employees had to use shovels as well as heavy equipment to keep the buildings of the museum from collapsing under the weight of the snow.

10-year-old Samuel gets a Galileo satellite named for himself

ONE OF the satellites that will be part of the European navigation system called Galileo will be named Samuel, as a drawing done by 10-year-old Samuel Petrík from Partizánske was chosen in the Slovak round of the European Space and Astronautics competition from among 764 entries by Slovak children. The jury consisted of Slovak host Adela Banášová, Slovak astronomer Juraj Tóth and the press secretary the European Commission in Slovakia, Ingrid Ludviková. Petrík’s drawing titled My Satellite Galileo featured a Slovak astronaut and the young boy’s own conception of cosmic space. The jury said the winning drawing attracted its attention through its colourfulness, positivity, artistic perception and overall impression.

Town seeks to save its ancient church

RESIDENTS of the municipality of Zacharovce near Rimavská Sobota are seeking funds to save their town’s 15th-century church, which is listed as a national cultural monument.

Debate League heats up February

THE REGIONAL rounds of the national Debate League took place in several locations in Slovakia in February. Sometimes called the “Academic Debate” the programme is a competitive debating activity for students at all school levels, aimed at improving their reasoning and critical-thinking skills. Secondary school students compete in two teams of three individuals, debating a topic with one team being “pro” and the other “con”. They are assigned one or two topics as homework several weeks earlier so that the teams can prepare in advance. Two easier issues are also debated on the spot with the teams having only one hour to prepare. Debate League teams compete four times a year.

Students in Tvrdošín protest against their cold school

Students attending the Tvrdošín Joint Comprehensive School, which brought together the previously separate Electro-Technical Vocational School and Business Academy, had shortened lessons in mid February due to persistent freezing temperatures and cold classrooms. About one quarter of the 600 students protested in front of school on February 13, refusing to go to classes, resulting in a negotiated agreement with school officials that reduced the length of lessons by one-third.

The day for all those in love, St Valentine’s Day, has become not only a blessing for retail shops and marketers but also an opportunity for couples in love to take a trip or do something fun together or to show their affection in an unusual way. Guided tours of the Bojnice Castle were enriched on Valentine’s Day with a search for “symbols of love”.

The European Tree of the Year competition for 2012 is now underway and a lime (Linden) tree from Lipany, the winner of the Slovak national contest, is ready to go up against some strong competition from its European neighbours.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day around Slovakia

Several events in Bratislava marked St Valentine’s Day – and not only for enamoured couples. A musical programme was held at Kuchajda Lake and Chinese happiness lanterns were released at dusk. People who brought a certificate confirming they had made a blood donation received a free happiness lantern. The city part of Ružinov hosted free ice skating for all age categories at its Areál Radosť that also involved a competition for children between 15:00 and 17:00.

LIVE audio-visual broadcasts originating from TANAP, the Tatras National Reserve, first began by digitally recording larger animal species and the broadcasts will now be enhanced with the sights and sounds of Slovak songbirds recorded in the garden area near the TANAP administration building.

During a concert of classical music in the Prešov synagogue in the summer 2011, a mobile telephone phone rang and a Prešov-born violin player, Lukáš Kmiť, aged 25, showed a moment of surprise and stared into the audience. The phone’s jingle sounded again and Kmiť then immediately mimicked it on his violin in a brief but astounding improvisation. The audience applauded and laughed – and at least one member of the audience recorded a short video that later appeared on YouTube, attracting millions of viewers.

Big Ben is now in Nový Ruskov

THE MASTER of the Guild of Artistic Blacksmiths, Vladimír Eperješi, had promised somewhat tongue-in-cheek that he would construct replicas of the 100 most beautiful buildings in the world for his hometown of Nový Ruskov in eastern Slovakia. He has now added a replica of London’s Big Ben to his past works such as the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Statue of Liberty and a Dutch windmill.

THE ANIMAL shelter of the civic association Sloboda zvierat (Animal Freedom) in Bratislava started the first month of 2012 with “business-as-usual” as staff member Karin Svobodová told the SITA newswire that “we saw no influx of abandoned animals after Christmas – we had just one case when a lady took a dog and returned it after two days; but it was placed in a different home within several hours”.

THE MKK Slovan bowling team in the town of Galanta organised a record-setting bowling marathon in 2010 called FUNK Galanta that received a certificate from the Guinness Book of Records as the Biggest Bowling Tournament in the World, with 324 bowlers participating over three days.
