A member of the Hradiská civic association found a spur sticking out from windthrow of a tree in the Small Carpathians in the town of Modra.
This coincidental finding revealed an unknown elevated prehistoric settlement, informed Matúš Sládok from the Regional Monuments Board (KPÚ) Trnava.
The finder followed the instructions of an archaeologist and he left the spur at the spot and concealed it.
“Taking into consideration the threat of the finding, archaeologists of KPÚ Bratislava and KPÚ Trnava along with the finder and other volunteers documented the spur and researched the surroundings the next day,” said Sládok, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
Prehistoric settlement
During the research, they found fragments of vessels dating back to the Bronze Age. Until now, there has been no documented archaeological finding older than modern history in the locality.
“The spur originated from the 14th to 15th centuries and minimally on the spike there is engraved decoration. The Monuments Board will ensure its expert conservation,” said Sládok, as quoted by TASR.
During the research experts also discovered that the locality was devastated by so-called detector-finders. They took steps to protect the locality.
