WINTER seems to be still favouring Slovakia’s skiers and the situation is not expected to change this week. Weather forecasts predict temperatures below zero and more snowfall, with perhaps an additional 20 centimetres accumulating. The big question is whether this will be enough for the higher-altitude ski slopes at Chopok and Lomnické Sedlo to finally have ideal skiing conditions on all slopes. At altitudes of 1,500 metres and higher, temperatures around minus 7 can be expected.
In addition to skiing, there will be lots of fun at the International “krňačky” competition at Donovaly on February 20. Krňačky is the Slovak name for an old-fashioned wooden sleigh. On the same day Štrbské Pleso will host the O2 Snowboard Tour and organisers have managed to lure the French extreme rider Julien Haricot, who will attempt a unique jump that has never been performed in Slovakia. During the same weekend the Slovak Grand Prix will be held at Solisko. Children can compete and have fun at the Milka Funpark in Vrátna. If you want to try the latest model skis or snowboards, visit the Snow Show in Jasná. A new, interesting novelty at some resorts is tracking the number of kilometres skied. For example, at Park Snow resorts – after you have entered your skipass number on their website – their tracking system will generate precise statistics of your day on the slopes.
