Signs of life on Day of the Dead

November 1 is the day we remember loved ones who have died. The Catholics call it All Saints’ Day; for Mexico’s more plainspoken Christians it’s the Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos).

Here, on Canada’s Godless Pacific coast, people go to the rivers and estuaries to watch the salmon run. The emotional payload, as it turns out, is similar.
