SINCE 2003, Slovakia has been providing more than €60 million per year for official development aid, which in ten years has amounted to more than €600 million. The overall number of bilateral development projects that Slovakia has implemented so far reaches 382, the Foreign Affairs Ministry wrote in its Situation Report on the Protection of Human Rights in the Slovak Republic, which has been elaborated in the second round of universal periodic evaluation of the UN Human Rights Council, as reported by the SITA newswire.
From last year, Slovak development cooperation focused on a gradual reduction of the number of priority countries. Slovakia provides development assistance to Kenya, South Sudan and Afghanistan as programme countries with long-term cooperation. Slovakia also helps countries of the Western Balkans (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia), EU Eastern Partnership countries (Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) and the Southern Partnership (Tunisia, Egypt).
“The basic sectoral priorities of Slovak official development aid in the period focused on democracy-building, infrastructure development (health, education), nature conservation, climate change and the development of agriculture,” the report reads, as quoted by SITA.
