A GROUP of activists greeted the cabinet, which held its October 2 session in Košice, with banners reading “Stop uranium mining”.
When Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský arrived, activists started shouting and whistling at him, the SITA newswire reported.
“We are surprised that the Slovak government is not seriously dealing with the problem of uranium mining and processing in the Košice urban recreation locality Jahodná Kurišková at it’s [today’s] session,” activist Ladislav Rovinský told SITA.
The activists are calling on the government to withdraw from the memorandum of understanding, which Malatinský signed with the Canadian company European Uranium Resources in mid December 2012. The memorandum lays out the positions of both sides if mining is approved.
European Uranium Resources reported that the Kurišková site has one of the biggest uranium deposits in the world, based on a survey made in 2005.
