Defence Minister Jozef Stank has announced further army reform, which by 2006 should see a reduction in officers from the current 13,000 to 3,500 and administrative staff from 12,500 to 4,500. Army ranks should swell from 13,000 to 16,000.
The changes are in line with Nato requirements that Slovakia’s army become more professional, mobile and modern. Slovakia hopes to receive an invitation to join the alliance at an expansion summit this fall in Prague.
