Bratislava Mayor Andrej Ďurkovský is set to launch talks with the state government and the Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH) about the increased costs incurred in the reconstruction work on Ondrej Nepela arena, the TASR newswire reported.
This comes amidst reports that Bratislava's unpaid bills might threaten the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship set to be hosted in Bratislava and Košice in spring 2011. The Sme daily has reported that if Bratislava fails to settle its due invoices with a supplier company, Ingsteel, the company will suspend reconstruction work on the arena.
At their last session before the municipal election due on November 27, city councillors adopted a decision whereby Ďurkovský – who is now also an MP for the coalition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) – is obliged to discuss the funding with the state government.
"I'm sorry that the state has left the city isolated vis-a-vis settling financial claims," said Ďurkovský, who is not running for re-election. He added that should his talks with the government yield no result the new mayor will hold further negotiations.
