Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren is meeting with the Slovak Vice-Prime Minister for a Knowledge-Based Society, European Affairs, Human Rights and Minorities, Dušan Čaplovič, on October 7 in Bratislava to discuss preparations for the World Climate Conference later this year, the TASR newswire was told by Ľubomír Šišák from Čaplovič's office. The conference hopes to establish a new global agreement on climate change.
Sweden, which currently holds the EU presidency, wants EU countries to intensively negotiate future co-operation in dealing with climate change. The basic question is: how much reduction in emissions is the EU able to approve as its commitment in the new global convention after 2012. Countries such as Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Great Britain promote a 30-percent reduction by 2020 compared to the emission levels in 1990.
The newer EU member states consider a 20-percent reduction sufficiently ambitious, however. “Of course, Slovakia wants to contribute to the success of the Copenhagen conference and expects that this world forum will provide not only basic answers to climate change issues, but will also start intensive global cooperation in the transformation of the world's economy,” said Čaplovič.
