Correctional officer caught red-handed

POLICE arrested correctional officer Ľubomír P for allegedly asking a prisoner for a bribe in return for a positive letter of evaluation to qualify him for probation.

According to the private news agency SITA, Ľubomíra Miklovičová from the Interior Ministry's press department said the officer was caught on May 3 accepting a Sk15,000 (€370) bribe from the prisoner's brother, who acted as an undercover agent.

The officer now faces charges of corruption and could face a three year sentence.

Since October 2002, 236 police officers have been sacked, 60 percent due to alcohol problems, and 16 percent due to involvement in corruption.
