Around 40 people gathered on SNP Square in Bratislava on the afternoon of May 2 to protest against the government's behaviour and what they called the “arrogance of those in power”, the TASR newswire reported.
Activist Lucia Jančovič from the initiative Citizens for Active Democracy (OZAD) stated in her address to the audience that six weeks ahead of the general election on June 12 that Slovakia is sleeping and that the protest was aimed at awakening people to openly speak about what they are unhappy about.
“In democracy, the public should be interested in what’s going on, and if anything is rotten in the state, they should resist to it actively and strive for change in all legal ways possible,” she told TASR.
Jančovič criticised the situation in the education system and healthcare and also spoke about the Patriotism Act, the electronic road toll system, and the police crackdown against human rights activists during the visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao in Bratislava last year.
OZAD is also set to organise a human chain on May 16 in front of the public-service Slovak Television building where Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) will be appearing on the discussion programme ‘O päť minút dvanásť’ (Five Minutes to Twelve).
